What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

I think certain world-size (or rather word size) milestones are hit, you should get a fun little badge. It won't mean much, but can give that sweet sweet dopamine we all love.

Suggested Milestones

  • 100 (Yay! You started!)
  • 1,000 (Getting the hang of it!)
  • 10,000 (WorldEmber Size!
  • 100,000 (More than a novel!)
  • 250,00 (D0 I need to write one of these for every single one?
  • 500,000 (Passion project!)
  • 750,000 (Top percentile)
  • 1,000,000 (Very top percentile)
  • 10,000,000 (Seems very unlikely this is achieved right now)
  • A badge for the highest word count across WorldAnvil? Just so we know who has it?

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Makes people happier. Bragging rights. Gamifies writing a bit!

What are other uses for this feature request?

You can always have different numbers than I listed, I just wanted to have more than "milestone badges". I love achievements that mean very little other than you did something, maybe others do to.

Follow up

As worlds can't have specific badges, yet? (Not sure if that will be a thing) it would be profile wide word count. I understand this process is pretty abusable, but if it has no value. Does it matter if it is abused?   Totally can ditch badge for highest word count. My curiosity just demands I know who has the most words!
I probably should have written a small essay on what gamification means and how it is absolutely not a bad thing. It helps a lot of people, especially those with a hard time focusing on some tasks that can be seen as repetatitve or difficult. Writing is fun, yes. But sometimes you get stuck writing something you don't like - especially if you intend to be commercially successful.   Glad to see so many interested though!

Y'all can stop wasting points on this, it is WAY past the time when it should be locked down. Not sure if votes are counting past when it should have been locked. Or vote like crazy, I'm not your boss.

The Team's Response

This won't be implemented as a badge, but a similar feature will be part of a future achievement system (still not planned/scheduled). We've also taken on board those of you in the comments who are worried about competitiveness due to this and we'll definitely keep this in mind as we discuss the specs of this feature.   —World Anvil Team

When I reflect on it, it does seem to foster an unhealthy environment. I'm not against competition and gamification in theory, but status symbols that other people can plainly see attached to the writing itself seems rife for misuse.   Ultimately, we're all writers (or gamemasters, who imo are also writers) trying to build our worlds. WA is an organization tool. Muddying that purpose would do more harm than good.

Gosh, not sure you should be writing something you don't like!   I personally don't care much one way or t'other about badges, but if some writers might find it fun I don't see the harm. Some of these comments seem quite overblown and mean...

World Anvil is software for creating wikis about imaginary worlds. Not really sure how badges make the software more useful for that purpose. Just seems like extra fluff that doesn't actually improve or contribute anything useful... sorry.

Up until now, badges have always been optional, opt-in things, and I think this should continue. However, I don't see anything wrong with them being added as an optional feature for those who are interested.

A very good idea to achieve your own goals and keep yourself motivated, but not to brag about it and get jealous of others. Maybe it would be possible for these badges to only be visible to you?

I support a achievement like system for writing. There are some of us that enjoy chasing achievements and getting all of them if possible. There are achievements for everything, We see sports players getting achievements in their sports over time , We see it in video games where people have in game achievements and then steam version of them. We see it in academics, So I support a version for writing. Something for writers and worldbuilders to want to chase and achieve.   Maybe not based on just words, But could be based on other things as well. But overall this is a good idea and i support it

WorldEmber and SummerCamp are already covering this in some ways, without gamifying the entire writing process.

Disagree with the highest wordcount or any other option that would have people compete with each other, but gamification in general can be an incredible motivator for a lot of people and I advocate for more of it, just add a box to turn it off for those who don't like it.   For this specifically, lot of overlap with the wordcount goals which I believe to be the better option of the two as you're able to self-regulate your word counts to be in the range of "achievable enough to keep motivation while being far enough away to push yourself", whereas a blanket system like this lacks that finesse.

Totally support an achievement-style system. I'll also second the "pls no highest wordcount on site" thing, the occasional updates from Dimi are enough. I think some of these replies are a bit too aggressive on either side of the gate in a manner that seems very bad faith - hope it's not getting you down, Oneri.

I have to be honest here, but was no one paying attention during the voting when the unhealthy competition system was all that was being discussed? These things MIGHT encourage SOME writers, but it has the even more damaging potential of making writers hate using WA because it's no longer about their creativity but getting the next shiny badge. Plus, it's nice that YOU are encouraged by that, but I (and I think many others) will just be feeling like shit because our word count just isn't good enough compared to others and that makes me feel awful about my writing ability causing me to STOP WRITING.   On top of that, I hate to break it to some people, but this is going to foster competition and WA does not really have the best track record for keeping competitions healthy. You literally admitted to the bragging rights that will come, so you know that competition will too.   World Anvil does not have a healthy community, as many, many people have pointed out in the past. Bragging rights can (and likely will) very quickly turn into bullying, both of those who are "good writers" (high word count) and "bad writers" (low word count). People have already complained in the best on both sides about cruel statements when it comes to likes and the Premier League, why do you think this would be any different?   It's cool that you might get some benefit from telling others how many words you have, and comparing yourself to others so that you feel better about yourself, but is it really worth the inevitable self-loathing and unhealthy competitiveness that is going to fester amongst other users? Issues that THE TEAM IS WELL AWARE ALREADY EXIST.   Genuinely, this might be one of the most harmful things this website could do to its users and I am so sorry to say, if I could, I would throw this idea out instantly if it meant that one person's mental health and joy of writing was saved (especially since, as you are suggesting this, people will not have a choice in whether or not their word count is published for everyone to see)   I know it's going to go through (look who suggested it and the people that support them, they automatically get a special pass), so I'll just weep for the poor writers who will be bullied, hate themselves, and be driven into a shitty head-space all in the name of bragging rights.

I personally love this idea. This would be a great motivation for writers which, as a writer myself, would love to see. I completely disagree with those that voted -300. The use of 'gamifying' as a negative thing for writing is also baffling to me. Creative writing should always be encouraged; if it motivates younger writers, I'm all for it. If all it adds is a badge then what is the issue?

I'm going to have to agree with the other -300 voter here. Oneriwien, I love you and your work, and I think you and many others deserve to be proud of what they have created. However, World Anvil has slowly (and perhaps inadvertently) in the direction of gamification and unfriendly competition and this feature would only aggravate that trend. While I think in a perfect world word-count badges would be fantastic, I do not believe that the average worldanvil user can be trusted with this functionality.

absolutely disgusted about this idea. Gamifying writing? bragging rights? it reads to me as unhealthy competition and a breeding ground for cheating and unhappy WA users. I think peoples mental health is their own responsibility, and not WA's. we already see enough upset people with the regular challenges. This is a leap to far. If you want to celebrate you making a milestone words just make a global post. (with or without a self drawn badge if you so desire)

This is probably already one of the items for the Achievements function that was mentioned to be in the works a couple of times on stream.   Besides that, I am very wary about turning every characteristic of WA into a gamified function with badges. When overdone, it takes the reward of a thing well done and deposits it into the reward of a shiny png, and then you get frustrated when you don't have the shiny png, because you have long stopped writing for the joy of writing. If it is added to the achievements, I hope it's only about three stages with a the highest one not being super high.

Overall upvote, but I disagree on encouraging users to strive for the highest wordcount because people will spam to get it.   Instead of badges, why not just the visual milestone markers on your wordcount progress bar, with just the next one out of reach? Also I'd like to tag on the additional suggestion of optionally displaying our global wordcount progress bar at the top of our editor page to motivate us to keep going.

I don't thing "largest word count" would work, what happens when it's topped? Does the first one lose it? That's not quite how records work... Would the largest word count work, per year perhaps? At any rate, it sounds harmless, possibly not very code-expensive, and fun! Two thumbs up
