Ability to retroactively link/submit articles to worldbuilding prompts

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Currently when you go to browse inspiring promtps on the worldbuilding prompts page, you can only create new articles to link them to the prompt page.   My proposal would be:
  • On the prompts page(s), add a button next to the existing one to submit an existing article.
  • There should be a search field to type in the name of the article to attach to the prompt (it should only display articles of the matching template).

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Frequently my friends and I have found super awesome prompts, but we've already answered them and have no way of linking our existing articles to the prompts. None of us enjoy re-creating articles just to link the prompt especially if our existing articles already have likes & comments.   At the time of submitting this feature request, there are currently 422 worldbuilidng prompts available on World Anvil - thats an awesome amount of inspiration! Having this feature added would also mean that we don't bloat our worlds with additional articles that only cover one niche topic.

What are other uses for this feature request?

This next bit isn't part of my request, but what are your thoughts on having the article template be optional and merely there as a "recommended/suggested template"? This could further allow folks to submit other kinds of articles that they feel fits the answer of a worldbuilding prompt. If you would like this as well, let the development team know in a comment with your vote :)

The Team's Response

Hello! Thanks for submitting this feature request, and to all who considered and voted on it. Having run the numbers, the worldbuilding prompts are probably our least used feature right now! Unfortunately, we don't feel we're in a position to dedicate development time to the right now. A question of whether this was even the purpose of worldbuilding prompts was also raised a few times during the discussion by various team members - the feeling was that prompts are intended to inspire ideas, not be ticked off. They can (and should) be used again and again! Sorry your feature request was not successful this time, but I hope you continue to enjoy the prompts!

I frequently create a placeholder article to link to other articles with very little detail in it. I return to these articles and flesh them out as and when necessary. It would be extremely motivating to know that if I complete these articles I could submit them for World Building prompts.

I agree with Naelin--prompts are a great excuse to flesh out stubs that I have created, and it would be nice if there were a way to use these.

I like this. It helps avoid having to re-create something just to link to the prompt when you've already done it.

This kind of defeats the entire purpose of the prompts.

I personally think this idea would be okay, but I believe that it goes against the World Anvil way ':D one of the things we're ever encouraged to do is, even if you already have something, make something else. If this becomes possible, I fear all the prompts won't be prompts but rather they will turn into "who already has an article like this?" and we will begin seeing articles made from before prompts began being submitted. Nevertheless, if the WorldAnvil folks don't mind, I won't mind either. Just providing a bit of insight as to why this probably hasn't already been implemented. If there was the ability to submit reset stub articles, as with most other community challenges, that would be a different story and I feel the WorldAnvil team won't be opposed. Nevertheless, thanks for suggesting. God bless! <3

This scenario of having pre-written a prompt all the time happens all the time for me.

I would absolutely love this. In fact, I would use the prompts a lot more often if it had this. As for the template type, I don't have a say as it doesn't matter to me, but I will always vote on the side of flexibility and freedom of choice, so if its viable, I'm down!

If it was possible it would be awesome to be able to submit articles retroactively to the prompts. And please yes to overall less strict template requirements in general, so the inspiration can still be traced without limiting the vision of the writer. Several people are moving to using generic templates or custom templates for their articles to make them fit better their idea and feel frustrating that these articles can't be featured as prompts answers or competitions entries.

I make stubs whenever I want to link a reference in an article (so that I don't need to retroactively link everything when I create the article) and sometimes look at the prompts to get an idea of which stub to work in next. It would be amazing if I didn't have to "rewire" all linked articles then delete the stub just so that I can use the prompt!

This would be super useful for me, as several times already I've been inspired by a prompt, but I always forget to click on the button to create a new article from the prompt, and by the time I remember I've already published the article and it has likes and comments and I don't want to delete it to make a new one from the prompt.   This would also let more people submit existing articles to fitting prompts and make more use of the system.
