What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Currently, notifications are sorted by newest first, but I much prefer to tackle older notifications in chronological order. I have to click several times to get to the oldest notifications.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

This will display oldest first and allow users to go through notifications chronologically. It should be a toggle because many people prefer newest first.

What are other uses for this feature request?

I don't think there are any, but it just gives more user choice.
