What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
A dedicated template to explore gods of a setting. While, yes, I can make the god as a character, it is not the same. A god can be an abstract ideal, with multiple representations. Different temples and religious orders can interpret and worship a god differently. A religion can follow the same god, but each religion have their own different structures. A god does not have to the same as a character.
What is currently missing is that I cannot select an article template for "Gods". I cannot fill out sections easily for things such as:
Symbols that represent that god
Colors that may be associated with the god
Affiliated religious orders
Tenets of that god
Representations/images of that god
Plane of origin of that god
Religious texts of that god
Lore/legends/myths about that god
These things I can achieve by doing a generic article and doing all the coding and formatting myself. So yes, I can work around. But
How does this feature request address the current situation?
It creates an easily usable template for building pantheons of gods. The character template is perfect for a character and what you need to know for a character. But a god isn't a character, exactly. It can be more abstract and more of an ideal, and this template addresses that. It is more than semantics, it comes down to useful and relevant input sections unique to this style of article.
What are other uses for this feature request?
Helping to build out a pantheon, and linking the god pages to the religion articles. Linking gods that a character follows. Linking a god page to a city page that they have patronage of. So many uses for linking and associating.
The Team's Response
Hello there everyone!
A god template already exists, it is a flavor of the the CHARACTER template (Divine/Deity)
With that out of the way let's go through the nitty gritty of the suggestion, the pros and the cons.
The follow prompts have been suggested by the OP
Symbols that represent that god That already exists as the prompt DIVINE SYMBOLS & SIGILS on the Character template under Divine/Deity
Colors that may be associated with the god I find this extremely minor, but can be added
Affiliated religious orders This exists on the inverse, you can already set a Religious Organization to have multiple deities and that connects a relationship between a God/Deity and the organization(s)
Tenets of that god That already exists under TENETS OF FAITH on the Character template under Divine/Deity
Representations/images of that god That already exists under DIVINE SYMBOLS & SIGILS on the Character template under Divine/Deity
Plane of origin of that god That already exists under REALM on the Character template under Divine/Deity as a connection to a geographic location
Religious texts of that god That already exists under HOLY BOOKS & CODES on the Character template under Divine/Deity
Lore/legends/myths about that god That does exist under the Myth/Legend template that CAN be connected to a character and thus a deity
In effect the only thing missing is COLORS which ... is kind of arbitrary? If there is so much religious fervour about it, we can add it. :P
How to handle Non-character gods
On the subject of gods which are NOT characters and thus do not have a personality, these can be handled by the Myth/Legend template or the Tradition template (depending on the requirements)
How to create a Pantheon
A pantheon is a bunch of Gods riding on the same motorbike gang :P , In other words, a Pantheon is an ORGANIZATION (Of type Pantheon, that already exists) that has many MEMBERS (Gods)
AND with multiple ORGANIZATIONS (Cults/Sects that can be created under the Organization > Religious tab) under it (Cult has as affiliated or parent the Pantheon)
What is the issue with creating another template
Simply put, creating another template which will only have the above, will in fact miss ALL THE REST which are currently needed to create a god which are under the Character template and will have non of the prompts or, even more importantly, connections that the Character template has. That will create a lame (feature-poor) template that will only be used by a very narrow band and that in most cases will require - doubling up with a Character template that will... cause the same issue in reverse.
We are worldbuilders and gamemasters we excel on finding imaginative ways to make things up - it is literally what we do. That means that each of us has a unique way of doing things. This is the reason that the templates of World Anvil always focus on broad scope. The Narrow scope can be handled by creating a Custom Template which is also going to become even more powerful in 2023.
What can be/will be done
Obviously we have a good amount of people that were not able to find the Divine/Deity tab.
I will add a new "Block" for God/Deity that will link to well... the Character template.
