First of all I would like to acknowledge that this is not a completely new suggestion. Much of this concept was suggested here, by user Zeer Gales. However, Dimitri said he would like to see it re-suggested with more clarity so here I am.

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Currently, diplomacy webs are -though useful- quite clunky to impliment and use. In order to add organizations or edit the web, one must edit the relationships between each organization one-by-one. I would like to propose a better interface system as well as some extra design features that I think would enable better designs and more flexibility.   Starting with my proposal for a different interface, I think the ability to edit the web directly is necessary- A single page where one can add organizations and then edit their relationships directly would be nice. Perhaps something similar to the content tree tool page?   I would also like to be able to edit the scroll in/out ability of the web as one can currently do for maps; I feel that this would greatly reduce the feeling of clunkiness in viewing the web. Alternatively, a check box which disables scrolling and therefore freezes the web in place may work, provided it does so at the correct magnification.   Additionally, I would like to be able to edit the colours denoting relationships within the web for clearer readability, as well as introduce an optional pop up panel which appears when you click on a relationship line- This pop-up would display the notes written about that relationship, allowing for greater clarity of information within the system.   Also, the ability to manually position each item within the web would allow for grouping of separate types of organization as well as organization by alphabetical order, aesthetic, map location, or other systems. I feel that this would allow for much greater flexibility in both design and application of diplomacy webs. Alternatively, a drop-down menu which automatically sorts the web by different organizational systems may work, although one would need to have defined each organization by type beforehand in some cases, and this system would not allow for as much flexibility as manual positioning.   Finally, it would be nice to be able to alter the appearance of relationship lines to better fit with aesthetics or to display different types of relationship. I propose a dotted line option, at the very least, and perhaps other types of line such as a dashed line or a dotted-and-dashed line as well.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Currently, diplomacy webs cannot be edited directly, nor is there a central page from which you can see each relationship, save for the chart itself. One has to go to each organization article and edit each relationship separately under the 'diplomacy' tab, which can be time consuming, especially when you have more than two or three organizations within your web.
As for my proposed design features, I believe that implimenting them would allow for greater flexibility and clarity of information in diplomacy webs.   Currently, one cannot edit the colours which denote relationships between organizations, but some of these colours are light enough in hue that they fail to read clearly against a light background. My proposal would introduce custom colour options, which should solve this prtoblem and allow for greater customization.
Moreover, notes written about relationships do not currently display at all, which feels to me like a lost opportunity. An optional pop-up box which displays that information when the relationship line is clicked on would facilitate better understanding for those who don't intuitively know what the relationship lines denote, especially in regards to organizations who are mismatched in how they feel towards one another.   Different types of line (straight, dotted, etc) could denote different kinds of relationship between organizations, from business relationships to personal ties and beyond. This, again, would allow for greater flexibility as well as enabling diplomacy webs to convey more information in an elegant manner.

What are other uses for this feature request?

The possibilities inherent in diplomacy webs are nearly endless, but they are currently constrained by the clunky interface system. I feel that this feature upgrade would allow diplomacy webs to display much larger amounts of information in an elegant, easy-to-read manner.

The Team's Response

Some really good points, some very bad ones on this suggestion. Regardless I understand the point and the issues. I will investigate but this IS going to be a major project by itself even if it was to be partly implemented.
