The Infernal Rod

The Infernal Rod is a a religious organization in Zor dedicated to the worship of Asmodeus, the infernal jurist. They are based primarily in the Aeuzian Empire, with a particularly strong presence in the southern city of Zorim.   Adherents of the faith, while somewhat scrutinized by members of other religions, are more or less recognized as valued members of Aeuzian society. In particular, their devotion to understanding even the most trivial minutiae of laws makes them highly sought after when a contract needs a thorough review.   Despite their espoused love of the law, or perhaps because of it, the sect has been known to cause problems on occasion. There have been instances of murder by adherents that were justified by one legal loophole or another, and some of the faith's more zealous membership have occasionally taken to vigilantism as a means of "punishing" citizens who violate even the most inconsequential laws. This has led to the advent of many amendments and addendums to the laws of the Aeuzian Empire, contributing to a consistution that now spans multiple volumes. This makes members of the sect both vital to understanding and applying Aeuzian law, as well as its greatest source of its ever-increasing convolution.

Divine Origins

The Infernal Rod was founded by the worshippers of Asmodeus, the infernal jurist in Aeuz as the first sect to public avow an allegiance to the ruler of the Infernal Seas. They argued that Asmodeus is not inherently evil, but instead exemplifies the virtues of a life devoted to the lawful pursuit of self-interest.

Tenets of Faith

1. Self-Interest is good, so long as it is pursued in accordance with the law of the land.
2. Those who live outside the law forfeit the privilege of its protection.
3. A deal is a deal. A contract signed, regardless of consequence, must be respected.

Political Influence & Intrigue

The Infernal Rod naturally attracts morally unscrupulous lawyers, and thus the courts of Aeuz are frequently influenced by the sect's membership. As such, many of Aeuz's laws have been influenced by their relentless pursuit of self-interest.

That which is lawful cannot be wrong.
