Vora Settlement in Zantin | World Anvil

Vora

The first settlement of an eastern country on Vorthali soil, Vora is the largest city on the continent. The hastily built capital has become a massive shanty town, most homes constructed from scraps, barely keeping out the weather. Only dirty government officials and sleazy entrepreneurs reside in well-constructed homes in an otherwise run-down port city.

Geography

The city is built on the coast of a small inlet, several miles away from the forest and several miles north of the Vorthali River. The soil is soft and fertile providing ideal farming land, especially closer to the forest.

Demographics

Vora suffers immensely from class division, with the vast majority of Vorans barely scraping by, even in trades that are usually lucrative such as smithing or architecture. The blame for this divide has been directed at the corrupt government, although the rapid immigration of Salorians to Vorthal may have also overpopulated some markets.   Humans, elves, and dwarves have the largest presence in the city's streets but some races also have a small presence in isolated quarters, specifically dragonborn and gnomes. Goliaths, although having a large population in the colony, are not present in large numbers within the city.

Government

The city is managed by a mayor who is advised by a small committee of local residents. The mayor is assigned by the governor of the colony while the committee is elected by the mayor. The current mayor, Peter Leiverson, was appointed after the previous mayor was tried, convicted, and executed for treason, although rumor claims evidence presented in court was strictly circumstantial.   Mayor Leiverson has elected to his committee mostly from the local business owners and has recently begun a crackdown against smuggling.

Industry & Trade

Most Vorans make their money working at the docks or on the farms, although those looking to make more money can take the risk of being a guard for explorers.

Infrastructure

Vora began as a small port settlement to facilitate exploration further into Vorthal and continued to expand the once small, makeshift docks into a massive harbor that can hold over one hundred ships. On average, the city will receive and send out six ships daily, making Vora one of the most active ports on Zantin.   Outside the city, large farms cover the flatland up to the edge of the forest, growing mostly cacao, sugar, plantains, and Thelot. These plants were chosen because there is not worry if the fields flood after a heavy storm.

Architecture

While the market district, shipyards, and governmental buildings are built mostly from finer stone, the majority of homes in Vora are made from scrap or poorly processed materials. Despite differences in materials, all buildings have a similar design; elevated to alleviate flooding and many windows or open walls to allow air to flow through.
