Faerdi Settlement in Zantin | World Anvil

Faerdi

"We built Faerdi to support our troops and establish civilization further inland. How ugly it has become..."   -Maximus Dovat
While the small town was built to support inland military effort, Faerdi's barracks are now bunkhouses for the hundreds of goliath slaves that work in the nearby mine.

Government

The town of Faerdi is managed by a mayor elected by the Kina Vora Governor. The mine and the goliaths, however are controlled by the Governor's Elite Guard; the town is not provided any compensation for providing troops with housing and food. This has led to the establishment of the extremely controversial "lodging tax", which requires any non-soldier and non-resident staying in the town to pay a tax for each night they stay.

Industry & Trade

Originally being a forward outpost for the Salorian Army, the small town has surprisingly well built walls and homes. Its diversity, however, lacks as the town has but a few shops and a handful of blacksmiths, who's main customers are the Elite Guard overseeing the mine, the caravans hauling the gold extracted, loggers, and the occasional explorer, who are usually only served once.
"The forest is upset; you can feel it in the soil. She shakes as the mining continues, and I fear the next tree I fell will be my last."   -Voran Logger
Most settlers of Faerdi find their income in logging, the massive trees of Vorthal requiring as many hands as possible in order to cut down safely. Even still, the trade is dangerous; cutting down the trees is often met with aggressive resistance from various jungle creatures. Some Vorans have begun believing that the forest has a god and that the mining and logging is angering her. These rumors have led to a recent decrease in workers at Faerdi.
