Marceddia

The ancient Marceddi were masters of commerce and seafaring, and their culture retains these attributes in the modern day. Marceddia itself is the largest island in the World-King's domain, unless one counts Paarheim, as there is contention among scholars as to whether it is an island or continent. Much of the island is mountainous, particularly its centre, while the northern and eastern portions are forested. The south of Marceddia hosts the Baltana and Fozze rivers, along which a plurality of the nation's population lives.

Culture

The Marceddia are renowned throughout the empire for their financial acuity, and often serve as stewards and bankers throughout the World-King's lands. The Marceddi are also known for their skills in shipbuilding and navigation, and they can be seen travelling along the coast from Bagara to Rihal, and even across the Muhyara Sea to Paarheim. The capital of Marceddia, Castermini, is home to the Ancient Cove, a centuries-old harbour that was constructed prior to the World-King's descent, and which the Marceddi people take great pride. Another mark of national pride is Mount Silanne, a great volcano which lies within the Tiscal Mountains, and is often compared with Mount Kohya in Zourania. The Marceddia as a whole serve the World-King dutifully, and reports of their continued involvement in organised crime are greatly exaggerated.

History

Prior to the World-King's unification of Zada, Marceddia was divided among numerous competing city-states. These would seek competition with one another in honourable pursuits such as exploration, industry, and trade, but would additionally partake in senseless violence against one another. They would band together against any foreign invaders, using their superior naval capabilities to protect their island.   When the World-King descended, many of the Marceddi foolishly attempted to stop his inevitable reign by joining the First Coalition against him. Once their allies in Zourania were defeated, the Marceddi fled to their island and attempted to hide behind their wooden wall. It was torn asunder by the World-King's might, and Nelkheti and Bagaran armies forced the city-states, led by Castermini, to submit to the will of the World-King.   Though most Marceddi are now, of course, loyal citizens of the Nelkheti Empire, the island has been home to a number of criminal syndicates. Until 526, these seditious elements within Marceddi society had considerable power, and threatened the good people of the nation. In 526, the World-King took pity upon his subjects, and deployed his armed forces to do battle with the crime "families", destroying them, and forcing the few surviving traitors into squalid hiding.

Demography and Population

Marceddia is a diverse land, with many migrants arriving from all across the empire, even from as far away as Paarmeib and the Touzir Basin. Likewise, the Marceddi also possess perhaps the largest diaspora of any nation, with many of their people travelling throughout the World-King's domain for the purposes of trade and exploration. Marceddia has a large middle class, and many of the great quantities of luxury goods produced their are sold to locals of all stripes. Thus is displayed the unmatched stewardship of the World-King.
