Shenlin

Shenlin (Serpent Forest) is a mystical settlement nestled within a dense bamboo forest along the serene Jiahe River. Protected by nature, the town is hidden within towering bamboo groves, which also serve as a source of bamboo for building homes, crafting tools, and creating beautiful ceremonial items. The people of Shenlin live in harmony with the land, believing the forest is imbued with ancient spirits and protected by sacred serpents. The town is famous for its spiritual significance, with the Serpent’s Fall, a grand waterfall, serving as the center for rituals and meditation. Shenlin's economy thrives on bamboo craftsmanship, medicinal herbs, and sacred snake venom, all of which are highly valued in nearby regions. The architecture of Shenlin is intricately designed with bamboo structures that blend with the natural landscape, giving the town an ethereal, peaceful atmosphere. Misty mornings, gentle rains, and sacred groves create a tranquil environment where spirituality and nature are closely intertwined.

Defences

Wooden Castle on a Hill: On a low hill overlooking the settlement, there is a fortified wooden castle known as the "Serpent’s Vigil." This structure, built with bamboo and reinforced wood, serves as both a defensive outpost and a spiritual sanctuary. The walls are adorned with serpent motifs, and the elders of the town often gather here to perform rituals. In times of need, the castle also functions as a refuge for the townspeople. The hill’s natural elevation, combined with the dense bamboo forest, provides an excellent vantage point, allowing the inhabitants to see intruders coming from a distance.

Industry & Trade

Bamboo Crafting: The town’s economy thrives on bamboo, which is used for building homes, crafting tools, and creating intricate scrolls and weaponry. Shenlin's bamboo craftsmanship is renowned for its elegance and durability, often traded to neighboring towns for other goods like fabrics or metal tools.   Medicinal Herbs: The bamboo forest and the waterfalls provide access to rare medicinal herbs that grow only in this region. The healers of Shenlin, often known as Water Artt shamans, use these herbs combined with their magic to create powerful healing potions and salves, which are highly sought after by outsiders.   Sacred Snake Venom: Some locals have learned to carefully collect venom from the sacred snakes that dwell in the forest. This venom is used in medicine, believed to enhance the potency of healing Artts, or in tiny doses as a component in ceremonial rites.

Infrastructure

Bamboo Bridge: Shenlin features several elegant bamboo bridges that cross the Jiahe River, connecting the settlement to small outlying islands. These bridges are masterfully crafted with woven bamboo, designed to sway gently in the wind yet remain resilient against floods. The bridges are often adorned with lanterns, lit by the town’s mystics using simple Water Artts to keep the flames burning even in the rain.   Bamboo Rafts: The river serves as a lifeline, and bamboo rafts are commonly used for fishing and transport. These rafts, equipped with long poles for navigating the slow-moving Jiahe River, are woven from thick bamboo that grows abundantly in the surrounding forest. Some rafts are also used to transport goods like bamboo and medicinal herbs to neighboring towns through the river system.

History

Festival of the Serpent Dancers: In the Kingdom of Xin Ruiku, the Festival of the Serpent Dancers is held annually to honor the great serpents that protect the land. Inspired by ancient legends, this vibrant celebration features dancers who wear elaborate serpent costumes made of bamboo and silk, winding through the streets like the mythical protectors themselves.   The highlight of the festival is the Serpent Dance, a mesmerizing performance where dancers mimic the movements of the sacred snakes, symbolizing protection, wisdom, and transformation. Drums and flutes accompany the dancers, filling the air with rhythmic energy as they wind through the town, bringing blessings for the coming year. Locals believe that participating in the dance or witnessing it brings the serpent's favor, ensuring peace and prosperity for the kingdom.   The festival is also a time for communal feasting, with special offerings made to the river and bamboo forest to honor the spirits of nature.

Points of interest

Serpent’s Fall: The most revered location in Shenlin, the Serpent’s Fall is a massive waterfall at the heart of the bamboo forest. It is not only a natural wonder but a spiritual center where locals meditate, commune with spirits, and perform rituals. The fall’s water is said to carry mystical properties, aiding in both physical and spiritual healing.   The Snake Grove: This section of the bamboo forest is particularly dense, and it is where the sacred snakes are most often seen. Visitors often leave offerings here to seek the wisdom or favor of the snakes, and many local legends speak of serpents guiding lost souls to safety.

Architecture

Bamboo Architecture: The homes and communal buildings of Shenlin are made entirely of bamboo, arranged in tall, graceful structures that blend with the forest. The bamboo is treated with natural oils to prevent decay, and the houses often have open designs with woven bamboo walls that allow air to flow freely, creating a serene, breathable environment. Buildings often feature snake motifs in their design, honoring the forest’s guardians.   Temple of the Serpent: This bamboo temple, located near Serpent’s Fall, serves as the spiritual heart of Shenlin. It is a multi-tiered pagoda-like structure, with each level representing a different aspect of spiritual progression. Inside, the walls are covered in bamboo scrolls that record the town's history, legends, and sacred rites.

Geography

Proximity to the Jiahe River: Shenlin’s location by the Jiahe River ensures abundant water supply for crops and daily life. The river is calm, with wide bends that create small, sheltered bays perfect for fishing and bathing.   Mountains and Waterfalls: To the west of the settlement, the land rises into gentle hills, where multiple waterfalls cascade down from underground springs. These hills, though not steep, are covered in thick bamboo forests and serve as both a natural barrier and a spiritual retreat.

Climate

Mild and Misty: The climate of Shenlin is mild, with long, misty mornings that give the bamboo forest an ethereal, almost otherworldly quality. The mist often lingers until midday, creating a cool, damp environment perfect for the bamboo groves and the many species of plants that thrive there. The summers are warm but tempered by the shade of the forest and the cool waters of the waterfalls. Rain is frequent but gentle, contributing to the mystical aura of the region.

Natural Resources

Bamboo: As the primary resource, bamboo is not only plentiful but grows rapidly, allowing the town to continuously harvest it for construction and trade. The bamboo is also used for making paper, scrolls, and ceremonial items.   Medicinal Plants: The forest floor is rich with medicinal plants that are harvested by the shamans for use in healing rituals or traded with neighboring settlements for rare goods.   Freshwater from the Waterfalls: The waterfalls provide clean, fresh water, considered sacred by the locals. This water is used in ceremonies as well as for irrigation and daily use.
