Tea Harvest Festival: During this festival, the Dono people gather to harvest the tea leaves, followed by a week-long celebration of music, dance, and tea tasting. The Freron and Dono often come together during this time, as the Green Moon Festival and the Tea Harvest Festival are sometimes celebrated in close succession, creating a month of feasts, rituals, and celebration.
Tea Ceremonies: The Dono conduct regular tea ceremonies, which are often held at dawn, as the first light of the day breaks through the mist. These ceremonies are performed to honor the spirits of the land and to strengthen community bonds. Each family in the Dono community has their own variation of the ceremony, but all include a moment of silence to reflect on the blessings of nature.
The Green Moon Festival: This is the most important festival in He Qiang, held once every spring to celebrate the beginning of the planting season. The festival is a week-long celebration of fertility, community, and the blessings of the earth. During this time, Freron shamans perform ritual dances in the terraces to invoke the spirits of earth and water, asking for a rich harvest.
Rice Offerings: At the end of the harvest, a portion of the best rice is set aside as an offering to the earth spirits. This rice is placed in small woven baskets and floated down the river, believed to carry the people’s gratitude to the spirits of the land.
