Sandzone Desert

Geography

The Sandzone Desert lies at the center of Mimi, stretching for miles in every direction. It covers most of the remnants of the floating island that crashed onto the surface, leaving a scattered landscape of sand dunes, rocky outcrops, and buried ruins.   While the landscape is mostly rolling sand dunes, there are patches where cracked stone platforms—possibly once part of the floating island—emerge from beneath the sand. These platforms are often littered with ancient robotic debris, giving scavengers much to explore. Craters and ravines, formed by the force of the island’s impact, create dangerous obstacles. Some are home to collapsed aqueducts or openings into the underground Living Labyrinth.   Sandstorms are common and intense, capable of stripping flesh from bone. Occasionally, explorers encounter magnetized sand pockets, where remnants of ancient technology attract metal objects, trapping unwary travelers.

Localized Phenomena

Wandering Activated Robots: The Sandzone Desert is haunted by stray robots from the floating island. Some appear to reactivate randomly, patrolling areas or following long-forgotten routes. Others seem to wander without purpose, though explorers believe there is a pattern to their movements, possibly tied to the AI systems still buried beneath the sand.   Magnetic Sandstorms: These rare sandstorms carry metallic particles left from the floating island’s debris, creating swirling clouds that disrupt compasses and disable electronics. Spelunkers caught in these storms find it nearly impossible to navigate and risk being torn apart by scrap metal shards carried on the winds.   Shifting Ground: Some areas of the Sandzone behave like quicksand, shifting suddenly beneath the weight of travelers or robots. Other parts of the desert seem to rearrange themselves, hinting that the landscape may still be influenced by unstable Magha energy from the fallen island.

Climate

Day: During the day, the desert becomes a scorching wasteland with temperatures high enough to blister exposed skin. The sun's rays reflect off the sand and stone, creating mirages that confuse travelers.   Night: At night, the temperature drops drastically, with many areas dipping below freezing. Strange sounds echo across the dunes—possibly the distant movements of ancient robots, burrowing sand crocodiles, or the shifting of subterranean structures. Some spelunkers believe the ghosts of the Miminian Annuko wander the desert at night, whispering warnings to those who venture too far into the ruins.

Fauna & Flora

Flora

Akahana Flower (Demon Flower): Found deep in the underground caves beneath the desert, this dangerous flower affects the minds of Annuko, leading to berserk transformations. Its petals are harvested by rogue spelunkers to produce Red Sugar, a powerful hallucinogenic narcotic.   Wandering Desert Mushrooms: Strange, bioluminescent mushrooms that sprout from deep under the sand and move slowly across the dunes. These mushrooms seem to have a limited form of sentience, avoiding areas with intense sunlight. They are suspected to have come from the floating island and may carry Magha residue, making them both fascinating and dangerous to harvest.

Fauna

Sand Crocodiles: These fearsome reptiles burrow beneath the dunes, waiting to ambush prey by bursting from the sand. Their scales are nearly impervious to conventional weapons, but Magha-enhanced weaponry can penetrate their thick hide. Sand crocodiles are territorial and known to attack both humans and wandering robots indiscriminately.   Wandering Robots: Some ancient robotic guardians from the floating island remain active, though they seem to wander aimlessly through the desert. These robots were likely programmed for maintenance or defense, but their programming has become corrupted. Many are hostile, attacking anything they encounter, while others attempt to perform strange, incomprehensible tasks from their forgotten directives. Their components are highly sought after by scavengers and engineers, though harvesting them is extremely risky.   Sand Moths: Enormous moth-like creatures with translucent wings. They only emerge during sandstorms, using the swirling winds to navigate the desert. Sand moths are harmless but considered an omen of death, as their presence often precedes dangerous weather.

Natural Resources

Robotic Components and Relics: The Sandzone is littered with debris from the floating island. Engineers and scavengers brave the desert to recover robotic parts, hoping to salvage advanced technology. Some of these components are sold on the black market, while others are used to power experimental Mottus Stone engines.   Magha Crystals: Deep beneath the sand, Magha Crystals form in areas with a high concentration of magical residue. These crystals are valuable commodities, used to enhance magic spells or forge powerful artifacts, though they are also highly unstable and prone to causing magical accidents.   Rare Flora: Beyond the Akahana, certain desert herbs found in the Sandzone have medicinal or magical properties. However, most of these herbs grow deep in the subterranean labyrinths, making them difficult and dangerous to harvest.

History

The Sandzone Desert is the result of the floating island’s catastrophic fall centuries ago. The desert sands are said to contain the ashes of the island, which disintegrated upon impact, creating a vast wasteland. The island’s collapse marked the end of the Miminian Annuko civilization, scattering their remnants across the underground caverns now buried beneath the desert.   The cause of the island’s fall remains a mystery. Some scholars believe it was a magical catastrophe, while others suspect a malfunction in the island’s AI systems. Whatever the cause, the impact was devastating, reducing the once-mighty floating city to ruins buried beneath the sand.
