Toroko

Toroko lies in the heart of the province of Mimi, strategically positioned 500 miles northeast of Kings and 400 miles south of Cathra, making it a hub for commerce, transportation, and research. The city’s central location allows it to function as the cultural and administrative capital of Mimi, overseeing both the industrial activities of Kings and the agricultural expanses to the north and east.   The landscape around Toroko includes expansive plains, canal networks, and patches of fast-growing Mimi grass that bloom vibrantly during the wet season. Toroko’s efforts to balance technology and nature make it an oasis of beauty and functionality amidst the more polluted regions of the Nyaan Empire.

Industry & Trade

Pharmaceutical Innovation: The labs contribute new medicines and treatments to the empire, solidifying Toroko’s reputation as Ysanaf’s medical capital.   Public Health: The Central Hospital ensures that soldiers, workers, and citizens across the empire receive the best medical care available.   Sustainable Development: The city serves as a model for sustainable agriculture and urban planning, attracting diplomats, scholars, and tourists alike.

Infrastructure

Canal System: Toroko’s canal network is both functional and aesthetic, providing water for irrigation, and sanitation.   Rail Connectivity: Unlike Kings, Toroko is well-connected to the rest of the Nyaan Empire via railroads. The central rail station serves as a hub for both passenger and cargo trains, linking Toroko to major cities and trade routes. The city’s location makes it a key transit point for resources from Kings and agricultural products from nearby regions.   Pollution-Cleaning Systems: While Toroko is far cleaner than Kings, the city still faces challenges with airborne contaminants from factories and airships passing through. In addition to the Pollution-Catching Tower, smaller purifiers are scattered throughout the city, creating zones of clean air and contributing to the city’s reputation for sustainable living.

Points of interest

The Grand Casino: Toroko’s casino is not just a place for gambling—it serves as a cultural hub and entertainment venue, where merchants, researchers, and officials gather to socialize, strike deals, and gamble fortunes. Some rumors claim that the casino is also a meeting place for spies and smugglers, making it a hotspot for intrigue.   The Central Hospital: Known as the best hospital in the empire, Toroko’s Central Hospital is a pioneering medical facility equipped with both modern treatments and experimental Magha-based therapies. It draws patients from across Ysanaf, as well as doctors and researchers eager to study new diseases and technologies. The hospital also runs satellite clinics across Nyaan Empire, ensuring access to healthcare even in rural areas. This focus on community health sets it apart from other imperial hospitals.   Specialties:
  • Magha Detox and Poison Treatments (particularly for workers from polluted Kings)
  • Advanced Surgery Wards equipped with Miminian relic-inspired technology
  • Psychological Rehabilitation Units for patients exposed to dangerous relics or afflicted by Magha poisoning
Vertical Farms: Toroko’s tall vertical farms are a marvel of engineering, utilizing both Miminian relics and modern technology to grow crops more efficiently. These farms supply much of the food for the city and serve as a model for sustainable agriculture throughout the Nyaan Empire. Their glass exteriors glow at night, giving the city a serene and futuristic appearance.   Metal Houses District: This neighborhood showcases homes made entirely of metal, originally inspired by Miminian Annuko architecture. The residents prefer these structures for their durability, and many of these homes have been passed down through generations. The houses are often decorated with vines and fast-growing grass, blending metal with nature in an elegant contrast.   Research Institutes: Toroko is known for its prestigious research institutes, specializing in agricultural sciences, engineering, and Magha studies. Scholars from across Ysanaf come to study at these institutes, hoping to unlock the secrets of Mimi’s ancient technology and explore the effects of Magha energy.
  • Mimi Agricultural Institute: Focuses on vertical farming and the cultivation of fast-growing grass, which has become a signature feature of the region.
  • The Institute of Applied Magha: Specializes in Magha-powered technology, working on ways to reduce contamination and integrate Magha energy into everyday life.
The Pollution-Catching Tower: A towering structure designed to purify the air, the Pollution-Catching Tower is one of the city’s proudest achievements. Ironically, the tower faces Cathra, a nearby city, rather than the much more polluted Kings. While officially this is to capture pollution blowing in from Cathra’s factories, it has become something of a running joke—and a symbol of the playful rivalry between Toroko and Kings.   Pharmaceutical Labs of Mimi: The pharmaceutical labs in Toroko are world-renowned for developing cutting-edge medicines and alchemical solutions. They specialize in using local flora and rare ingredients, such as Jellyfish Juice from the Miminian Bushland, to produce innovative treatments.
  • Development of Magha-resistant medicines to counteract Magha contamination
  • Creating performance-enhancing serums used by soldiers and explorers
  • Producing experimental cures for addiction to Red Sugar, the narcotic derived from the Akahana flower

Architecture

Utilitarian Neighborhoods with Natural Flourishes
Toroko’s utilitarian neighborhoods embrace simplicity, with homes made of metal, stone, and wood, but residents decorate their houses with fast-growing grass that clings to walls and rooftops like vines. These grasses bloom into vibrant flowers during the wet season, turning the neighborhoods into living gardens that attract both visitors and wildlife.
A Blend of Ancient and Modern Styles
The city’s architecture reflects both its Miminian heritage and modern innovations. Many of the original Annuko structures—characterized by verticality and intricate ironwork—have been preserved and repurposed. Newer buildings incorporate glass, steel, and Magha-powered features, creating a futuristic yet grounded aesthetic.
Public Spaces and Gardens
Toroko is known for its public gardens and parks, where residents can relax and enjoy the blooming flowers. Some parks feature statues of ancient Nyaanese heroes or mechanical art installations that move in response to the wind.

Climate

Mild and Wet Seasons: Toroko enjoys a mild climate throughout most of the year, with a distinct wet season that transforms the city into a lush garden. During the wet season, the fast-growing grass that covers the city bursts into bloom, filling the streets with the fragrance of wildflowers.   Air Quality and Seasonal Winds: Thanks to the Pollution-Catching Tower and other purifying systems, Toroko enjoys cleaner air than other industrial cities like Kings. However, during certain times of the year, winds from Cathra and the Sandzone Desert can bring in dust and smoke, creating temporary pollution spikes.
