Liar's Valley

Liar's Valley is a deep-sea location on Greenerth. The valley's name is misleading, as it is a trench. It is the second deepest trench in the ocean it is found in. The trench is named after the fairytale in which a mother sacrifices her children after they repeatedly lie to her.

Geography & Location

The trench is located a hundred miles west of the Cresque Trench, which is just off the coast of Nym, a country in the Region of Sarra. The maximum depth of Liar's Valley is 6,493 metres, where light cannot reach. It is incredibly cold at this depth, with an average temperature of about -2℃ on the seabed.

At this depth, pressure is much higher. Any plant and animal that lives on the seabed cannot survive at higher depths, and nobody at the sea's surface or around that height can survive at the bottom of Liar's Valley.

Fauna & Flora

There is a surprisingly large amount of plants and animals inside Liar's Valley. Most animals are designed to thrive in the increased pressure, and cannot live anywhere else. They are also accustomed to the light levels, or lack thereof, and make up for it with bioluminescence. One species includes the squidface ray; a small species of bioluminescent ray with squid-like arms. Squidface rays have the ability to change the colours of their glowing bodies multiple times a second, and use this as a form of communication and attracting prey.

Possibly the most well known plant species is the death root. These large plants grow out of the seabed, and are so tough they require submarines ramming into them to break. Samples show they have thick layers of barricading cells all around their stalks, and these stacked together make the plant almost unbreakable. These roots grow in giant clusters and stick out of the seabed, growing up to 10 metres in length. Many prey species choose to live in and among the roots, as predators struggle to navigate between them.
