Horrormancy Physical / Metaphysical Law in Yonderverse | World Anvil

Horrormancy

Horrormancy is a field of magic involving horrific visions and demons. This field of magic is tricky to learn, and the entire concept puts many people of. Those who do perform it are perverse in their psychology; only the truly deranged will find joy in performing magic of this kind.

Utility & Usage

Horrormancy covers a small range of spells. The most common are ones that plague people with visions.

Demon Summoning

Demons reside in the Horror Dimension, and with complex horrormancy spells it's possible to drag them through into the Capital Dimension, or any other dimension. It's an incredibly difficult process, and very few can successfully do it. Even fewer can control the demons once they have passed into another dimension.

Nightmares

Had a particularly horrifying nightmare recently? There's every chance you upset a horrormancer somewhere, and that was them getting revenge on you. Horrormancers are able to inject nightmares into the dreams of anyone they like, so long as they can recall the person in their minds. They can't cast nightmares on strangers; the more familiar the person is to them, the stronger the nightmare they can cast.

Users

There are almost no concentrated groups of horrormancers anywhere in the Yonderverse. Typically horrormancers isolate themselves from others, either living in such densely populated areas where they make no significant impact by working in factories and such, or by living so far away from anyone else that they have zero contact with others.

Those that enjoy casting nightmares upon people opt to live in cities and such, as they can come into contact with much more people. Users can be identified by green and brown mottled eyes - it is believed that the corruption caused by practicing this field of magic causes this shift in eye colour. Many horrormancers wear sunglasses or eye contacts to try and hide this.

Social Reputation

Horrormancers are some of the most disapproved magic users in the Yonderverse, simply due to every single user lacking empathy and any sort of love for anyone, or anything. Some feel bad, most try their best never to run into horrormancers, and some actively try and scare off these people.

Mastering Horrormancy

To become a master of horrormancy, one must truly have no empathy. The existence of empathy in one's soul holds people back from progressing as a horrormancer, but those lacking empathy are quickly able to progress into becoming a master. Unfortunately, there is a huge gap between amateur horrormancers and master horrormancers, and the latter is more common.

Nightmare magick. You are a monster and I love it. This is amazing. The lack of empathy is a nice touch as well, gives it some texture, I like magick that has qualities or prices or something like that, tied into it. Changes how people behave, or people have to already be just the right flavor of messed up to use it. Gives it some...texture, some nuance, some substance instead of just whipping infinite power around. So that is a really nice touch, very cool.

This is such a cool idea, and like Keon mentions the it's such a nice touch that a lack of empathy would be a merit. It makes sense that it'd be easier if you don't get scared of your own manifestations or care if others do. I like it a lot!   Reading your take on magic and the different forms of it has been fun, and repeatedly makes me tempted to add some form of magic system to Rosepetal. Still haven't been able to make up my mind about it. :)

Thank you so much! Writing magic for me is extremely difficult, both to come up with and then to make captivating, which is why I've barely touched on Yonderverse magic. But if it's something you really want to add to Rosepetal, you totally should!

Oh, this is just so cool! I love the idea of horror as an entire branch of magic. Especially with the corruption and... the eye color changes!! Ok now... I *really* need that "Chef's Kiss" emoji here!

Honestly, people, don't summon demons if you can't control them! Though I suppose with their lack of empathy they don't really care about that.

Maybe I should make it so that horrormancers suffer if they can't control their demons, just so there aren't demons wandering around everywhere *aggressively thinks* ... or maybe i should have demons wandering around everywhere
