Nassim Chavoshi

Doge Nassim Chavoshi

As the Pit Doge, Nassim is officially the 'first amongst equals' in the heirarchy of the anarchic-style commune that runs The Pit Edge, but her charisma, strong personality, and ruthlessness towards those who refuse to listen, mean that in the 20 years since she claimed the position, her power has grown considerably.   Recently, Nassim has displayed somewhat of a softening attitude towards the Federation of Xah, allowing numbers of Protectors to rise, much to the dismay of the Northup Alliance and some who fear that the Federation seeks to annex Pit Edge and take its unique technologies. An ongoing rumour is that she, or someone she cares about, is suffering from some incurable ailment, and the Federation has offered a cure, for a price.

Physical Description

Body Features

Tall for one brought up in Downside, with the variable nutrition available in the food there, Nassim has taken great care throughout her adult life to maintain her physique and fitness, knowing that being considered conventionally attractive is another social tool that can be used to get what she wants. Whilst body modification is not uncommon in Pit Edge, and certainly well within the means of most, Nassim prides herself on her natural appearance, having only the most basic of implants for information storage and augmented reality.

Personal history

Early Childhood

Unlike most who manage to secure roles in the management of the Pit Edge, Nassim was born in Downtown, the least affluent of the Pit Edge's three residential districts. Her father was a dock worker, operating cranes and drones for the unloading and loading of cargo ships, and her mother was officially a worker in one of Downtown's many small-scale factories, but supplemented the family income with private showings online. She had four siblings, two older brothers and two younger twin sisters, but her brothers were both killed when she was young in gang-related violence. Whether they were part of a gang at the time, or were simply innocent by-standers caught up in events is still hotly debated; Nassim's parents insist their sons were not involved in anything criminal, but law enforcement had their suspicions. No formal charges were ever brought, and the incident was never resolved.

Adolescence

With her mother caught up in her grief, and her father working long hours, Nassim, only 11 years old, found herself looking after her her eight year old sisters. For the next 5 years, she juggled her education with her domestic responsibilities, her relationship with her parents rapidly deteriorating. They blamed her for every bit of trouble her younger sisters got into, and did not see the merits of her sticking so rigidly to her learning. In response, she accused her mother of neglecting them all, and her father for never being around and wasting most of his income on drink and gambling. Despite it all, and to her shock, when she reached majority age of 16, her parent disavowed her, and threw her out of the house.

Beginnings

Homeless and with few connections thanks to her busy life until that point, Nassim spent several days sleeping rough until a chance encounter with some of her brother's old friends got her established working as a courier. What she carried, she did not care, as the job gave her somewhere safe to sleep, and some protection from the lowlives that preyed upon vulnerable young women in Downtown. She worked in this role for two years, building up connections with those to whom she transported to, and picked up from. Eventually, she established her own business, offering 'no questions asked' transport services in Downtown and Uptown and, distinctly enough, between the two.

Growth

Nassim's influence and power grew quickly over the next 18 months, and her company 'Anotrans' now covered deliveries across most of Pit Edge. Only the secure parts of The Gun and The Forge remained beyond her reach. Up until that point, the Pit Edge was ruled by a loose coalition of industrial and political leaders who met in an anonymous fashion in what was popularly called the 'Ghost Circuit'. Whilst each faction in Pit Edge had almost total autonomy, it was useful to coordinate strategic goals, and to provide a place for arbitration. The Ghost Circuit was headed by the 'Pit Doge', a role that was largely powerless and used to maintain some kind of structure to Ghost Circuit meetings. Nassim used her influence to get a place at the table, an almost unheard of feat considering her age, and then in a careful manipulation of favours, blackmail and threats, she managed to get herself appointed as Pit Doge.

Current status

During her time as Pit Doge, Nassim has continued to gain power and authority, with Anotrans now holding a virtual monopoly on transport services within Pit Edge. Whilst technically the position of Pit Doge is without any substantial power, her right to set meeting agendas and her ability to get almost all of the Ghost Circuit to make the decisions she wishes, gives her almost unlimited power on the station. A few instances of people resisting her demands led to a series of well publicised and very grusome reprisals, and as such further dissent to her demands has been limited.

Education

Educational provision on Pit Edge is largely dependent on location and wealth, although primary education via remote teaching is available, for free, to all residents on the station. Until the death of her brothers, Nassim was seen as quite giften, and had ambitions to grow her education, perhaps even attending one of the universities available in Uptown to those from Downtown with one of the many scholarships on offer. After the loss of her brothers, she simply did not have time to stick to her education as much as she liked, and her parents made it very clear that it came second place to caring for her sisters.   Since becoming Pit Doge, she has taken the time to pick up her eduction once more and has obtained a number of advanced degrees in logistics, engineering, and politics, much to the surprise of many of her opponents, who underestimated her intelligence to their detriment. The polyglot nature of her intellect has allowed her to pick up the essential concepts behind many of Pit Edge's most crucial systems, and whilst considered a ruthless tyrant by her adversaries, the station is able to run efficiently thanks to her understanding.

Intellectual Characteristics

Considered one of the brightest minds on Pit Edge, some of the scientists from the research facilities in Geektown are amazed at her ability to quickly grasp the concepts of the most complicated subjects presented to her. Whilst not as focused in her education as most, her interests are widespread, and there are few topics in which she does not hold the basic essentials. Where she acknowledges her knowledge is lacking, she is always keen to allow advisors to provide the necessary information, but it is a rare situation where she is faced with the same unknown twice.   Nassim is also highly charismatic, with a face and demeanour that puts almost anyone instantly at ease, and mannerisms that tend to bring out people's friendliness. She is well aware that she is considered conventionally attractive, with curves in all the right places, and uses this to her advantage as well. Many deals are sealed after some 'personal time' with Nassim, although most do not speak of what occured during such meetings; those that do tend to disappear, or turn up in various states of injury.

Morality & Philosophy

Outwardly friendly and gregarious to the public, in private and with her opponents Nassim has a reputation for being practical at best, and amoral at worst. No tactic or activity is considered too out of bounds to achieve her goals, and whilst it might appear to be a 'ends justifies the means', on a few occasions people have reported that she enjoys the darker side of things too much for it to be entirely pragmatic. Torture, murder, cruelty to all kinds of people at all levels; all have been used at some point, gratuitously sometimes it is whispered.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Her publically professed goals in life are simple - to ensure that Pit Edge remains free and running efficiently, with the added bonus of bringing wealth and power to her and to those she considers close to her. Privately, her motivation is entirely hedonistic; she enjoys being in control, enjoys the power it gives her, and the respect offered. Her upbringing showed her the life people lead when things are out of one's control, and she has vowed to never be like that ever again. When she wants something, no matter what it is, or who suffered to get it, she will have it.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Nassim maintains a carefully cultivated inner circle of confidents and advisors, access to which is one of Pit Edge's most sought after social groups. Numbering less than 20, only members of this clique can be guaranteed access to Nassim herself, with most of her business being handled by underlings. Almost all of them identify as female or non-binary, with only three who identify as male, and only one of them as exclusively heterosexual. Five are family members, with her twin sisters and three cousins part of the group. The most controversial member of the group is Kaitlyn Wong, once a member of the Federation of Xah's Technical Caste. Claims have been made that Kaitlyn is actually a deep-cover member of the Leader Caste's Mɛnʌlɔkʌtɛ organisation, but Nassim has personally vouched for Kaitlyn's loyalty on numerous occasions, but refused to reveal why she is so sure.

Family Ties

Not long after gaining the position of Pit Doge, Nassim's father and mother disappeared. Whilst some rumours state that she simply had them killed, those who know Nassim also know that she would not just kill her parents. In fact, she had them taken to Hightown, the upper class part of Pit Edge, and they live in relative comfort, albeit confined to their quarters and restricted in who they can see and what they can do. Nassim believes it is only appropriate that they live the rest of their lives being denied the things that they enjoy, in repayment for her treatment in her youth. That they cannot be used against her is also important.   Her younger twin sisters became some of Nassim's closest companions and advisors, rescued from what was likely to be a seedy and soul-destroying career joining their mother into online private shows. Whilst they display slightly more morality than their ruthless older sister, they also have a reputation for not caring about the side effects of their actions. Rumours persist that the two are more than just sisters, as they never leave each other's side, not even to sleep or wash, but those who vocalise such thoughts rarely live much longer.
