Quester

“Quester” is really just a cleaned-up, government sanctioned title for mercenaries. These individuals – whether a solo act or affiliated with a guild – are paid to take on jobs for people. Whereas Mercenaries are generally combat focused, Questers are just as likely to end up working temporarily as a stocker at the grocer, or a hauler for the fish market. However, they are certainly best known for their exploits as monster slayers. There is a skill set, albeit an uncommonly required one, for slaying monsters. But, when there's a cockatrice terrorizing a town, someone needs to take care of it.   As a result of the varied nature of their work, Questers tend to have two titles. They're rarely just a Quester, they'll usually also be a Skipjack, Mage Knight, or perhaps a Bushi. Quester is more a definition of workflow than it is an actual description of an occupation; it's a lifestyle more than it is a job.   Though not a guarantee, most Questers will be in guilds, as the guild makes it far easier to find work. The only way to actually be a Quester and not a drifter who does some jobs is to actually accept a quest with the seal of the local government. In many cases, the only way to actually get paid is to go through this channel, as the reward is held by the government once the quest is posted.   It should also be said that, for the most part, Questers are in one of three categories: Caster, Hunter, or Warrior-type. These serve as general guidelines for how to statistically analyze Questers, or ask for a specific skill set when putting up a job.

Career

Qualifications

The only real qualification is that you must receive a rank in order to take the quests. This is due to the fact that it is, in fact, illegal for someone who is under-ranked to take a quest. Part of the reason for this is safety, but there is also the matter of scalping quests; lower level Questers will take a high level quest, thus taking it off the market before selling it to someone who is actually capable of completing it.

Career Progression

To progress as a Quester, you must complete quests. There are values ascribed to the difficulty of quests, resulting in their rank, but also results in the number of Experience Points one will receive. The Guild Master of the guild keeps track of the Experience of each of their members. When a certain amount is accumulated, they will be eligible to rank up. The Guild Master must be the one – or have put someone – in charge, as it is their choice, ultimately, whether or not a given member of the guild is allowed to rank up.   The pinnacle of the Quester's work is to become an S-rank.

Payment & Reimbursement

Questers are paid according to the stated amount for the quest. This varies greatly, but there are relative ranges that can be expected. Each rank up will likely pay more than the rank before, and, generally, the D and C will pay in copper, B and A will pay in silver, and S pays in gold.

Other Benefits

There are no inherent benefits, but, if the Quester joins a guild, there are many perks. However, these are mostly due to the guild than the job, as an artisan – say, a Smith – would receive the same.

Perception

Purpose

The purpose of a Quester is to meet the needs of the people. Jobs that are difficult for others to do – like slaying a monster – or are not particularly desirable – hauling fish – still need to be done. This is where the Questers come in.
