S-rank

The S-rank is the highest achievable rank in the Guild System. Even some Guild Masters are not actually S-ranks, as reaching this level requires so much of a person. While every preceding rank can be obtained via dutiful service to the guild, S is only granted to those who demonstrate an immense amount of power. This means that the vast majority of S-ranks don't receive the natural due to their natural talents.
For example, Cherry Munamase is an S-ranked Quester with the Gryphon's Blade. He gained his S-rank power by binding his soul with a Yugawan light spirit.
Another example is Malachi Androxas. His lightning magic knows no equal because he started eating the hearts of Lightning Dragons. In order to even do that, he had to commission a mortar and pestle strong enough to grind the desiccated hearts into a powder. After that, he had to build up his Mana tolerance so that he could actually handle the influx of power. Even then, he's become a time bomb; the power builds until it's required release.
Both of these examples serve to illustrate what's required in order to reach the S-rank.
