The Great Fens
5,000 square miles of cold, damp bogs, marshes, and estuaries. Few trees, poor soil, constantly shifting stream beds, frequent mists and fogs and rain, enlivened by occasional heavy rain and flooding. Freezes fairly solid in winter. The only thing more universally despised than the weather are the native inhabitants, the Fen Folk. The fens are kept watered by the Birchbeck River, but it constantly changes its course through the marshes, so any map is likely to be inaccurate.
