Fae

The Fae are powerful magical creatures that not so much live on this world as in a magical realm adjacent to it. They are not strictly bound to any of the laws of physics due to not being actually from this realm. Their influence on the physical world is usually limited, more due to their general disinterest in the physical world if there is nothing to serve their needs than anything else. Variously described as capricious, insane or even cruel by other races, Fae interference can be disastrous if they do decide to interact with the physical world.

Basic Information

Anatomy

In the physical realm, Fae appear mostly as bright lights in the colour of their Fae Court . Usually, these lights are small, ranging between the size of the flame of a candle to a ping-pong ball. Occasionally, they can appear as columns of light similar in size to the humanoids they contact. Rarely, they appear in the form of a giant-blazing sphere of light in an intimidating display of power. Inside their courts they appear as fabulously beautiful humanoids, although it appears they can shape shift at will.

Genetics and Reproduction

It is not known exactly how the fae reproduce, but it does appear that they have at least two genders. They keep meticulous ancestral records, but it is not well understood how the fae understand parentage: records often list any number of parents of any combination of genders, and a single couple of a male and female does not appear to be the standard by any measure.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The fae do appear to eat foods, but only those from the fae realm. The food is apparently conjured from thin air. It appears that most foods are inspired by foodstuffs from the physical realm, although the fae insist that it's the other way around.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Fae have a strict, complex hierarchy within their Court.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The fae inhabit a non-physical realm removed from the physical world. There are specific places where they can cross over between the two worlds, but those spots differ for different Courts. It appears a physical being cannot cross over unassisted.

Average Intelligence

Highly intelligent, although since they are beings from another realm not bound to physical constraints, their intelligence is vastly different from those of the Clay People or Octopoids.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Fae are the most adept magic users in this world, using magic in every aspect of their lives inside the fae realm. However, in the physical world they are limited to the affinities of their courts.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

Fae have the ability to grant magical powers to the Clay People and Octopoids, making them Witches. This is usually done in the form of a deal. Almost always, this deal is in the Fae's benefit.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Fae names vary greatly with what rank they have within their Court. The higher the rank, the longer the name.

Major Organizations

All Fae are organised in a Fae Court. These courts are ruled by a King or Queen, and a complex hierarchy of nobles and bureaucrats all Fae are evidently part of, no matter how humble their position.

Beauty Ideals

It appears extravagance is the most highly held aesthetic ideal for all Fae, regardless of affiliation. Long hair, extensive jewellery, and elaborate costumes are expected.

Average Technological Level

The Fae do not seem to care for or quite understand technology, although some, especially the Yellow Court, are particularly fascinated by it. They use magic for all their needs, so they do not understand the necessity.

History

Not much is definitively known about Fae history, not in the least because time works differently inside the Fae realm, apparently progressing at the Fae's collective whims. It is usually assumed they predate the physical realm itself, or at least the Ancients. There are very few milestones to definitively gauge how much time has passed in the Fae realm in comparison to the physical realm, since the Fae rarely interact with the physical realm unless there is something they want. There are many known instances of Fae, often very minor Fae in their own Courts, who venture into the physical realm to have themselves worshipped as deities by the locals. This is probably the most common interaction between the Fae realm and the physical realm, and the most common instance of Fae granting Witch powers.   It is unknown how far back the organisation of Fae into Courts goes, but it seems that not even the Fae remember a time before the Courts existed. Records indicate that at one point there used to be six Courts, two of which (the Cyan Court and Magenta Court) since dissolved, and three more (the Orange Court , Indigo Court and Violet Court ) came into existence later, making the seven Courts we know today. It seems that all Fae Courts dislike all other Courts and relations tend to range between mild animosity and full-on war, only forming alliances out of necessity because they dislike another Court more.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

They usually have very little regard for the physical species, with very few exceptions. Rather, they have a complex relationship with the various kinds of Elementals, using them as companions and war animals.
Lifespan
Apparently infinite, although time flows differently in the fae realm
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Fae always appear in the colour of their Court.
