Duke / Duchess

The title of Duke or Duchess is one of the highest ranks of nobility, bestowed upon individuals in charge of vast regions known as duchies. These territories typically encompass multiple counties or towns, and the Duke or Duchess holds significant power and responsibility over the land and its people. Their duties include maintaining peace, security, and justice within their domain, providing military support to the king when necessary, and ensuring the prosperity of the region through taxation and governance. Dukes are often commanders of armies in times of war, playing a critical role in the defense of the realm. The title carries both prestige and great responsibility, linking its holders directly to the kingdom’s stability and well-being.

Qualifications

To acquire the title of Duke, the primary qualification is being a direct descendant of the previous Duke or a designated heir. There is no requirement for formal education or training like a degree or medical exam. However, the Duke must receive education in governance and leadership to prepare for their role. This education is provided from youth by the noble family itself.

Requirements

To be eligible for the title of Duke, the individual must be a direct descendant of the previous Duke and at least 16 years old. The title is inherited through bloodline, and there are no requirements regarding gender.

Appointment

A person is raised to the rank of Duke through appointment by the king. The appointment is formalized in a special ceremony, where the Duke-elect swears an oath of loyalty to the king. This ceremony is typically presided over by the king or a high-ranking official, and may include the presentation of symbols of authority, such as a sword or seal, to mark the official conferment of the title. The oath binds the new Duke to serve the king and the realm with honor and loyalty.

Duties

Dukes and Duchesses bear significant moral obligations due to their leadership over vast regions. They must ensure the well-being and safety of their subjects, providing for their needs and maintaining peace and order within their duchy. This includes ensuring justice is served, protecting the vulnerable, and promoting prosperity through fair governance. Additionally, Dukes and Duchesses are expected to lead by example, displaying honor and integrity, and supporting charitable endeavors to aid those in need. They must also provide military support to the king when required, leading armies in times of war and defending their lands from external threats. Their role extends beyond politics, as they must nurture the morale of their people and military, fostering unity and loyalty.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

In case of inappropriate behavior or non-fulfillment of duties, the title can be taken away by the king himself and transferred to another person from the family or, in the worst case, taken away from the family and given to another noble family.
