Artifacts

An artifact is an object surviving from before The Fall of Magic at the end of the previous era. Mostly commonly found in the Kingdom of Cynia.
While any object could potentially be an artifact, it is the magic imbued in such things that has allowed them to survive over a dozen centuries and gives them their status. Mages from the Age of Dawn are said to have mastered the art of Enchantment which has allowed these objects to not only persist through the fall of cities, whose ruins they can be found in, but also given them a myriad of abilities.
Some artifacts, such as warming brooches, are relatively common and believed to have been in regular use by the ancient peoples. Others are unique items, having presumably been made for a specific purpose. The Kiniswell University has a number of such artifacts in their stores whose purpose has yet to be determined. It is known, however, that one does not need to possess magical aptitude to make use of an artifact, and having one enchanted is the easiest way to bypass the normal requirements for casting the spell it is imbued with.
While efforts are being made by Cynia's mages to recreate the magic-tech that brought these artifacts into existence, very few have been successful. Wealthy nobles can purchase certain artifacts or have some retrieved from the ancient ruins, but it is still quite rare to see any outside of the university grounds. The royal family has recognized the advantage that artifacts can give to Cynia, and has been continually funding the efforts of its mages into recreating the enchantment process.
