Deeper into the Goblin Lair Report

General Summary

After resting in the goblin chieftain's room, the companions take some time to investigate the other two doors in the goblin common area. One of the doors led into a storeroom. The swarms of centipedes did some damage before they were able to look through the various crates and boxes. Finding some basic supplies, the chose to move on.   When they opened the other door, they heard a disembodied voice asking them to stop. The voice said it was the tribes witchdoctor and asked the party for safe passage. Never revealing himself, the witchdoctor said they had received a lot of money from a pretty human blonde to firebomb the village and the ferry. The pretty blonde was in the old outpost, and was approaching goblin tribes throughout the hills.   In exchange for his freedom, the witchdoctor would go back to his old tribe and let them know not to trust the pretty blonde, and to spread the news to the other tribes. When Abebane asked him to reveal himself, the door opposite the one from the common room opened and some in the party heard the patter of footsteps. While the companions gave chase, it's hard to catch what was likely an invisible goblin witchdoctor running away.   Convinced that the witchdoctor got away, the party continued its raid. The southern passage from the witchdoctor's room went a little way before seeming to come to a dead end. A bit north of that door however, another door opened into a room with four cages. In one cage was an orc, and in a second cage was an elf, both throwing insults at one another. The elf, who called himself Jalven, asked to be released and for the "thing" to be killed. Crasock, a Rageborn, took offense. The orc just wanted to be freed. Asked about a blonde human, the orc said that the blonde also was contacting orc tribes, but his tribe didn't trust the human.   Annoyed with the elf, the companions let the orc go, and waited until they were sure he was far enough away before freeing Jalven. Jalven also revealed that he was looking for a missing elf maiden, Tillani, who should have been accompanied by a bodyguard Sir Joffar, which was the only reason he had left the Tuathwold. Finally freed Jalven headed off, but not until the orc had a good head start.   The only other passage was filled with think spider webs. Gymno firebolted them until he cleared the passage, at which time Connal took point. A giant spider crept along the ceiling before dropping in front of Connal. Crasock rushed in to help the warrior, and soon the spider lay dead at their feet, but both had taken major wounds.   The passage beyond the spider led down. Crasock determined that the goblins had never made it past the spider. After some time, the passage opened into a cavern. A pool of water lay to the south, but what caught their interest was a pair of bronze doors in the north of the cavern. A moldy skeleton lay nearby, arm stiff reaching out towards the door. After checking everything out, the consensus was that the skeleton triggered a trap ages ago. Eventually, curiosity overcame the party and they opened the door.   A short stairway rose up into an twenty-foot-square antechamber. Four figures, one in each corner, animated and moved to intercept the group. The four zombies were no match for the party. Another bronze door to the south beckoned further. Using the zombie's swords, Crasock pulled at the next door, which opened into a long columned hall. At the end of the hall, two gargoyles flanked another set of bronze doors. The gargoyles didn't move but their eyes followed the party as they crept up the hall.   Opening the next set of bronze doors, the party was gladdened that the gargoyles didn't animate or attack. A large sarcophagus, flanked by two golden candelabra lay in the center of the room, a body draped over it, holding a staff. As Connal approached, a shadowy figure arose from the sarcophagus, or maybe the body. Abebane targeted with shadow, who looked as if beginning to cast a spell, with radiant flames, while Gymno relied on true fire. The spells of both companions struck, with Gymno's firebolt resulting in a devastating strike. Before it was even able to act, the shadowy mage dissipated.   The threat now gone, they companions pried open the sarcophagus and found silver ingots among other treasures. The staff held by the dead figure on top of the sarcophagus was surely magical. Gathering their treasures, they exited the goblin caves and began to make their way back to Hillsboro.
