The Frozen Oasis

The Frozen Oasis is a national landmark in Asheris, the capital of the Asmya Kingdom. The fountain marks a historical event surrounding the arctic tempest every year. With an annual event, the fountain is protected by magick and treated with the utmost respect by the citizens.

Purpose / Function

The fountain serves as a secret passage entrance to the underground tunnels of the Pass of Brethren leading to the Emsronto Gorge, a set of mountains north of Asheris. It helps people travel for safety right before the arctic tempest storms start.

Architecture

The fountain was constructed by Asitai Palletea, a well-known siren with a noble lineage. He designed it to be an ice sculpture enchanted with magick to stay frozen all year long. The main portion of the fountain is the upper half of a female siren's body, where water spouts from a frozen pillar behind the siren. Over time, the fountain needed to be enchanted with more magick to protect it from the storm's wrath.

Entrance

When Asitai created the fountain, he added an entrance to a secret passage. This entrance could only be opened via a magick phrase uttered by the king or heir to the throne. As the entrance opens, the ground pulls away, folding in on itself, until a dark tunnel with a set of stairs can be seen. A brazier can be lit with a blue flame a few feet into the tunnel, enveloping the passage in an eerie blue light.

History

The fountain was built five years after the first storm in 879 TA. Asitai, the creator, was a noble who saw everyone as equals and in need of protection from the harsh weather the storm brought. The other nobles saw otherwise and blocked commoners from entering the passage the year it was built, resulting in seventy-eight percent of the commoners dying that year.   Over the next year, the capital struggled to remain afloat among all the building damage and crop destruction. The royal family decreed the passage a haven for all who needed it. That year, in 880 TA, the commoners were allowed to enter the passage before the nobles from then on.   Over the next twenty years, the fountain sustained damage that Asitai could repair with his magick. However, the Circle of Magi was asked to perserve the fountain with proper magick to prevent any damage from completely destroying it. Centuries have passed since then, with the fountain under the protection of the Circle of Magi and the royal family.
