Creeping Dreadnettle Species in Wolf Mania | World Anvil

Codex

Creeping Dreadnettle

A deadly vine sweeps across the floor and dangles from the upper branches of the Peashen Jungle, hungry for its next prey. Those unfortunate enough to fall into its trap, are absorbed through the veins gleaming scales.

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

by Amelia Nite (Stable Diffusion)
The creeping dreadnettle, also dubbed "vines", reproduce like any other plant; the pollen from a male fertilizes the female ovary and a seed develops. Some versions are hermaphroditic, or "perfect" as some cultures would prefer. The hermaphroditic creeping vines contain flowers that have both male and female structures. A select few versions of the vine are male and have dull green scales to hide along the jungle floor, whereas female vines have bright poison green scales that help them to blend in with the leaves of the jungle.

Growth Rate & Stages

Vines need lots of room to grow, as they grow six to twelve feet per year, or one inch a day until it reaches full maturity.

Ecology and Habitats

by Amelia Nite (Stable Diffusion)
Creeping dreadnettle enjoys dark or dim-lighted areas to fester and grow. A cool, frigid climate helps them inch along and wrap around trees without anyone barely noticing. The thick, dense pine nettles mask these scaled vines. In some cases, the vines bury themselves underneath brush and dead plant matter that scatter the ground.

Dietary Needs and Habits

by Amelia Nite (Stable Diffusion)
The creeping dreadnettle devours only meat, especially larger prey. Anything smaller than a deer is seen as nothing more than a crumb, worthless to even nibble on. When sensing the vibrations of their prey, the vine will wait until the prey is close enough to strike and kill. During this process, the vine penetrates the skin and absorbs the liquid out of its victim until it is nothing more than a dried husk left on the forest floor.

Biological Cycle

The colder the temperature, the more active the vines are. Yet, as the season grows warmer, the creeping dreadnettle gets weaker and slips into a hibernation state. Shortly before this time, the vines must find copious amounts of prey to store nutrients until the weather grows colder.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

These vines are a great resource to Kvia after the world went to crap. With the warped still roaming the jungle, these vines find the warped to be a delicious meal, making it easier or citizens of Kvia to hunt whatever prey they need at the time.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

by Amelia Nite (Stable Diffusion)
The creeping vines can only be located within the Peashen Jungle, sometimes from the direct center all the way to the edge, but most of the time, in the southern part of the jungle. In rare instances, the vines can be located to the east, reaching out toward the sea for more water. Records indicate that the vines are slowly inching their way toward the northern and western sections of the jungle. In approximately the next 1,000 years, about half the jungle will be infested with these vines.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

A single vine can sense prey up to fifty feet away, depending on how big it is. A mouse will need to be about five feet from the vine, whereas a bipedal creature, such as an elf, can be fifty feet away, with detection occurring via vibrations.

Interesting and scary plant. I like that it grows in cold temperatures and hibernates in warm weather, and its type of diet that makes it very different from other plants. Well done. However, I'm not sure if the plant ingests its food from its scales (introduction) or opens up a victim's body and sucks it out (dietary needs). Could you explain that in a little more detail, please?

Terrifying. I love that it will sense the different creatures at different distances, and the detail that it hibernates in summer is a nice twist.
