The morning after the fight with the "High Priestess" saw the group trying to help pick the pieces of the now shattered sect of Freya. The group did their best to comfort the Handmaidens and then set out to Selvianne's now abandoned cabin.
The light of day revealed a couple of curious discoveries. The first was some kind of ceremonial garment. Embroidered on it was the same symbol as the Mark of Devotion that so many of the women bore. The symbol took on new mystique with the revelation of Selvianne's vampiric nature. Witcher Bas speculated that this symbol was perhaps a crest or some type of vampiric coat of arms depicting a vampire family or clan. The other curious discovery was a chest full of old-fashioned clothing. Wolfface noted that he recognized this style of clothing from artwork that dated back to the period around the year 1050. Further, recalled that this particular style was Nazairi folk dresses from that time period.
Duno brought up the fact that no one knew what truly had happened to those who had taken "The Pilgrimage". The dwarf suggested that they look for clues around that as well. The interior of the cabin did not seem to point to any definitive clues, but Witcher Bas did notice dried blood on the door jamb and other spots of the structure thanks to his sensitive Witcher senses. A well traveled path was revealed by Duno, Wolfface and the Witcher. Blood stain on a tree here... consistent broken branches there... after about 400 meters or so into the trees behind the leader's cabin there appeared a ravine almost 30-40 meters deep. The group could see bones at the bottom of the ravine. Duno climbed down on rope provided by Xeneva as the elf and Zune, the gnome, held it steady to ensure it stayed fast to where it was tied.
It was apparent that this the final resting place for pilgrims. Human skulls and faded cloth littered the ravine. Duno thought of Eydis, the herbalist, back in Lublow and made up her mind to let her know about her daughter's fate. With heavy hearts, the group made their way back to the women.
The group made ready to leave with Haldor. Realizing that some of the women would want to leave and escape the situation, the party talked with several of the women and the boat that Haldor had used was loaded up with seven Handmaidens to go back to Faroe. One of the women in particular, Brynhild, agreed to accompany the group off of Faroe at Duno's urging.
Arriving at Faroe, Holger Blackhand, as previously reported, agreed to mobilize his clan to run interdiction through the section of the great sea that Jan Natalis had asked for. Wolfface found a physician to treat his broken leg. Asbjorn was approached by the Witcher to repair his armor. He asked for a couple of days to work on the repairs and Bas was agreeable to the arrangement. Meanwhile, Duno stepped into Eydis' shop. There, she broke the news to the woman about Lindell's fate. While clearly heartbroken, Eydis' expressed her gratitude to the party for bringing an end to the madness. She packaged up some toiletries that Duno had shown in interest prior and gave them to her as a token of her gratitude.
Two days passed and Asbjorn delivered the patched up armor. The party, Brynhild and Saliyah's crew set sail for Kaer Trolde to report back to Kern. Roughly a day later found The Selkie’s Fury sliding back into port.
Saliyah accompanied the party to meet with Kern. They found him where they had last seen him: The New Port tavern. Witcher Bas asked if he knew of a way to get a message request back to Keldar in Kaer Seren. Kern nodded, saying that he had made some acquaintences with many of the sailors and some of the captains over the past few weeks and thought he could most likely find someone to get that to Bas. Kern asked for a couple of hours to find that courier.
Bas and the rest of the group decided to stay and have a beer, relaxing as best they could. While there, they heard the latest events that had occured as they had been away for a few days: King Bran's body had been recovered and his funeral had taken place the day prior in the Kaer Trolde port. Now, all of the jarl's heirs were to be converging on Kaer Trolde to announce their desire to be considered for the crown.
Meanwhile, Wolfface and Xeneva left the others to their pints and decided to look around as the Zerrikanian was in search of a particular set of instructions regarding the use of Telepathy. As fate would have it, there was an old curiosity shop that had in it many imported goods. There, amongst a pile of texts from Artetuza and Ban Ard was instructions for casting Telepathy. Xeneva negotiated on the wizard's behalf and he walked away with the scroll in hand.
They returned to the to the tavern. Shortly thereafter, Kern returned with a captain willing to take the message to the old Witcher's keep in Kovir and Poviss. In the message, Bas requested that Keldar send along the following and to have it sent to him:
The diagram for Moondust Bombs.
The formula for Vampire Blade Oil.
The formula for Cursed Blade Oil.
The Witcher placed one of the alp's teeth in the envelope.
When the Witcher asked where Keldar could send the requested items, Kern then told the party that they were going to Nazair's major port town of Zouthaven. Bas wrote this last bit into the message, then sealed the missive and the courier left.
Kern asked if they would like to be briefed there and then or if they preferred to get underway. Witcher Bas pointed out that it might be more prudent to do so away from any potential eavesdroppers. Kern nodded and Saliyah made ready to go. Duno informed Brynhild of their next destination. Brynhild agreed to continue with the group expressing that she wanted to put everything behind her and start a new life.
The Selkie's Fury got underway once the party's animals were loaded and the full complement of crew and passengers were accounted for and all aboard.
Saliyah, Kern and the party gathered in Saliyah's captain's quarters. Kern than began to give them the following information concerning the Empire's search for them, the political situation of Imperial occupied Nazair, and their mission:
Nazair is currently under Nilfgaardian control. Assengard, the capital, was desolated and the king has been replaced with a head of state of the Empire's choosing. Most of the nobility has also been brought to heel. However, many of the clan families in the interior are resistant to the occupation.
Carrying swords are outlawed. Elven messers are the choice of carry in lieu of since they are basically large knives.
Kern informs the party that he is a mage that was trained at Gweisson Haul. While party was away, Kern got the latest report from Temerian intelligence regarding the party via megascope from Glynnis var Trahaern. Specifically, the efforts to throw off the Nilfgaardian search for the group after Cadfan of Ebbings encounter is going well. There was an unfortunate casualty turned up in the form of the mage Rumple Steltz Skein being interrogated forcefully by Cadfan himself. Temerian intelligence interviewed the gnomish wizard afterwards. He did not know your whereabouts after you made it through the portal that landed the group in Vengerberg's sewers. However, bulletins and some wanted posters are being seen here and there. The chance of a Nilfgaardian recognizing some of the group is still a possibility, but the risk is low unless attention is drawn to themselves. Kern recommended that those who were wanted may need to consider a change of appearance of some sort.
There has been a popular performing group named the Silver Sands that has been working with The Crescent Moon. The Crescent Moon has asked the performing troupe to keep an eye out for shipments from Ofier arriving in the port city of Zouthaven. They have been performing in the seaside bazaar for weeks and will work with the group to identify the goods. The Crescent Moon is certain the shipments are being imported through Zouthaven, but the Silver Sands group has not been able to identify which vendor merchant is in league with the Empire. If the Silver Sands were to be caught snooping to closely to the different shipments, then it would be a large blow to the Crescent Moon. The Silver Sands are well known in Nazair. The troupe is one of the Crescent's top intelligence gathering cells due to their popularity and access to the nobility. This is where the party will pick up the investiation and begin working with the Silver Sands.
The party will be posing as hired muscle for the performing troupe to run security during performances and while they are on the road. They will be the ones to do the more thorough investigation in the port town. Duvran Van Silvein, the head of the troupe and father of the family will have more details upon their arrival.
Kern finished the briefing. Saliyah asked if she could assist with this part of the mission. Her mother was Ofieri and this detail surrounding the shipments coming from Ofier had piqued her interest along with her and the crew's desire to help in any way they could to upset the Empire's plans. The party agreed to her offer.
The session ended with wrap up of the briefing.
