Sorvetz Reisel Character in White Reach | World Anvil

Sorvetz Reisel

"It is now the policy of this company to continue as it has since the fall of the Star League. We do not produce weapons of war, we produce aid for those who have been harmed by war. Anyone who objects to this is welcome to surrender their pension and resign effective immediately. If I discover any one of you present today are working counter to this policy, there will not be a hole deep enough to hide you."
— Sorvetz Reisel, on assuming the position of Chief Executive
Sorvetz Reisel, Chief Executive of Rysel Industries, heir of Jacob Reiseille. To this date he remains active in the daily administration of one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the Federated Commonwealth and commands a great deal of assets should he feel the need to apply them as leverage. Most find him cool, calculating, and ruthless when it comes to enacting plans to reach his goals. His daughter even refuses to discuss her relationship with him, claiming it is "an irrelevant and very private matter".

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

"Look at me, what do you see? If you say anything other than 'an old man trying not to die', I know you for a liar or a sycophant."
Sorvetz has been bound to life support for the last ten years, and yet this has not diminished his mental acuity at all. He remains sharp, both in wit and tongue, while his body is steadily decaying and shutting down around him. Many who actually meet him are surprised he is still alive, a fact he finds quite irritating. For the last decade, he has been confined to a chair which has been outfitted with as many pieces of life-support apparatus as he can to continue operating as the Chief Executive. Due to such, he rarely indulges in interstellar travel away from his offices on Rigil Kentarus

Body Features

His skin tone has become quite pale, almost ashen in cast. He keeps his hair cut short, though it does seem to still grow along with his fingernails. In his advanced age, it has become silver-white and he keeps it cut short so as not to interfere with parts of the life-support chair he is bound to. There are numerous places where implants have been added in order to allow the chair's systems to be attached, in order to keep his body functioning.

Facial Features

Due to age and various health issues, Sorvetz' eyes have become somewhat sunken and his cheeks drawn tight over the bones; that they are notably so, but there is rarely an indication he is critically ill, is a testament to the medical regimen he is forced to undergo. A neatly-trimmed beard is kept in a style which went out of fashion before the turn of the millennium, but he keeps it as a matter of habit. Piercing brown eyes remain sharp and alert, never darting around but instead prone to sweeping slowly over people or objects.

Apparel & Accessories

Despite being confined to the chair for life-support, Sorvetz affects a formal business suit when he needs to make an official appearance. The suit itself is in a fashion which comes and goes, being composed of a long-sleeved jacket and slacks (in a chestnut-brown color), a shirt (of lighter cream linen), a vest matching the jacket, and a silver-grey tie. This is traded for similar-hued medical clothing when in an unofficial capacity, designed to be more comfortable for wearing in the chair with its various connections.

Personal history

"If you had my life, you would not wonder at why I cling to it so jealously in the face of Death herself."
Sorvetz Reisel was born a couple generations prior, on Rigil Kentarus to Jacob Reiseille and an unidentified woman. He was an exceptionally bright student with an affinity for business, but his father was always quite distracted with running the business to notice him. That is, until a startlingly strong influenza season caused rampant death and Rysel's vaccines proved mostly ineffectual against the particular strain. By the time the epidemic had been fought back and an effective vaccine was distributed, there were a number of deaths which included Sorvetz's mother. His father only survived through testing every vaccine on himself until one worked.
The worst was yet to come, however. As it turned out, the stress of those years and the loss of his wife led Jacob down a dark place mentally and he snapped. Sorvetz became slowly aware of several questionable business decisions as he climbed roles in the company, but was always brushed off and given excuses. When his father approached him about an arranged marriage to Kendra Sephros, Sorvetz accepted only if he was named to the board of directors for the company. He insisted the position need not have any actual authority, but agreements were made and soon the matter was done. It was at this time Sorvetz found some of what his father had been up to. It caused him to begin planning to remove him from power in the company, to try to keep it from collapsing under mounting debts.
The plan began as slowly subverting others on the board of directors who had been growing alarmed at what Jacob was doing to the company, and while Sorvetz was given no authority over anyone and only a single vote on the board he was able to convince a majority to go along with him in attempting to oust his father from control of the company. This wound up developing from a shouting match in the boardroom to a battlefield on Carnwath where Sorvetz led mercenaries against mercenaries belonging to his father. After seizing the facility his father had holed up in and entering with a trusted few, Sorvetz rapidly left and demanded the facility be destroyed and all prisoners taken from the staff to be executed. He did not explain why.
Since that day, Sorvetz has spent the majority of his time cleaning up Rysel Industries from the mess his father had made of it, and training his daughter Hechek to take his place in time.

Education

During his upbringing, Sorvetz was put through rigorous courses of study in order to prove himself worthy of working for his father. Despite severe friction with Jacob, Sorvetz pursued every single course with the intent to master the content and understand it thoroughly. As such, he is very well-informed about many of the processes and products created by Rysel Industries from the 29th century onward to the present day. He continues to push himself to study any new research which may prove useful to the operation of the company.
Lesser-known these days are several courses learning to operate a BLR-1D BattleMaster which belonged to the family, but is listed as decommissioned after 2989. When asked about this time in the academy, and pressed for an answer, Sorvetz refers to it as "a conceit from my father, that a man must be ready to fight for what he believes in".

Mental Trauma

After witnessing something during the schism with his father over control of the company, Sorvetz made it an important mission to dismantle anything his father had put into action. It did not matter whether it was apparently innocent or benign, Sorvetz liquidated assets, destroyed research data, and reassigned personnel he did not get rid of. Bringing up family at all is a good way to ensure one is on a short grudge list; showing any knowledge of his father's doing is a good way to find an unfortunate accident in your future.

Morality & Philosophy

After the schism and seizing control of Rysel Industries, Sorvetz has shown interest in making sure the follies which had drained the reserves for the company are never repeated and enough profit made to restore the company to being one of the larger providers of various goods in the Lyran Commonwealth. Primarily, this is through using the arm of the company which handles medical supplies and research which is headed by his daughter Hechek.
As a result of his upbringing, Sorvetz has come to adopt a somewhat Darwinist view; if you prosper, it is because you are fit to. If you cannot prosper, it is because you lack the necessary qualities to do so. There are very few excuses for failure beyond being incapable of success, if all things are normal.

Taboos

Due to events concerning the schism with his father, Sorvetz has very strong opinions concerning genetic screening and potential manipulations. Considering the rest of the Inner Sphere has long since agreed any manipulation of genetic data and in vitro development of human organisms, this is not seen as terribly out of place. However, this objection does proceed into terminating several research projects with regards to treating or discovering congenital defects.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Following the schism, Sorvetz has dedicated a good portion of his attention to making absolutely sure what plans his father had set in motion would never come to fruition. Beyond this, he has become driven to be sure his only legitimate child Hechek Reisel would be able to step into his shoes on the day his life support fails entirely.

Religious Views

Sorvetz proclaims himself an athiest, and has always had strong words for those who "rely on invisible forces". Despite this, there is evidence he holds some ideas which suggest he believes (or hopes) there is some form of an afterlife.

Wealth & Financial state

Sorvetz is actually quite wealthy, though most of that is in non-liquid assets such as his company and holdings. The company comprises the bulk of these assets, from multiple facilities and divisions to a couple ships which were used to travel around from system to system before his health declined.
