Situation Overview

The contract with Lady Hechek Reisel laid out a three-part arrangement, and with the information which was available it was made clear Ouroboros Sun was a threat to more than White Reach. According to details given by Lady Reisel, a concealed base on Jedora was dedicated to processing hazardous material into chemical weapons. The leader of the Ouroboros Sun was intending to deploy them against various targets within both the Federated Commonwealth and the Draconis Combine, an act which could drag both powers into a war in the belief the attack was made by the other.

Priam Company is tasked with quickly striking the facility and shutting down the processing centers which are producing the payload. With speed being critical, Commander Sethan assigned mostly quick-moving units in order to reach the facilities and force the automated systems to shut down. Acting as commander for this mission is Maeve Agnes in an AWS-8Q Awesome, with instructions to engage at range and support the bulk of the mercenary forces.

Objectives

Priam Company Objectives: The mercenaries must close to within two hexes of a processing center in order to successfully broadcast the shutdown command code. (4 VP) Beyond this task, the elimination of assets from the Ouroboros Sun is important to prevent them from gathering their forces back together. (1 VP per eliminated unit)

Ouroboros Sun Objective: The fanatics of the Ouroboros Sun are defending their processing facilities, and will score for each turn after the first one they maintain control of the control centers. (2 VP) As well, their focus is on throwing off the mercenaries and making an example out of them for daring to strike with anything less than overwhelming force. (1 VP per eliminated unit.)

Setup

The region the processing facilities have been situated in is supposedly one wracked by unstable hillsides and steady downpours coming off Wildstorm Valley. Satellite images provided by Lady Reisel have proven this not to be the case, as the chemical holding tanks and processing centers have been disguised as grain and liquid storage tanks. Priam Company's units will deploy along one edge of the combat area, while the defenders will deploy their units second within four spaces of the Laboratory facility.

The terrain consists of a variety of potential obstacles: 2d6+4 Elevated Terrain, 2d6+2 Light Forest , 1d6-1 Shallow Water, 1d6+4 Rough Terrain elements are placed on the board as agreed upon by both players involved. For this iteration of the scenario, 11 Elevated Terrain, 10 Light Forest, 5 Rough Terrain, and 1 Shallow Water elements are used to populate the board. The three processing facilities each consist of two Fluid Tank buildings and one Power Generator building, which will be placed in the middle third of the battlefield between Priam Company's deployment edge and the opposite one. The Laboratory facility which runs and monitors the processing tasks is positioned halfway between the centerline of the map and the edge opposite Priam Company's chosen home edge.

    Special Rules

Forced Withdrawal: When certain conditions are met, the defending units will surrender in position. These conditions are as follows:
    • If a BattleMech expends all their ammunition and has no more available weapons.
    • If a BattleMech loses one side torso location due to damage.
    • If a BattleMech sustains internal damage in two torso locations or three limb locations.
    • If a BattleMech suffers two Engine hits or one Engine hit and one Gyro hit.
    • If a BattleMech is rendered immobile or otherwise unable to escape the battlefield.

Salvage: Priam Company is permitted to choose one unit of salvage per two Victory Points scored, provided they can successfully shut down at least two processing centers.

Objective Control: When a unit is within two hexes of a mission objective is considered to be "contesting" the objective. Whichever side has the most units contesting an objective may claim it for the purposes of objectives. In this scenario, if Priam Company successfully can claim a Processing Center at the end of a turn, they may score a capture. If the Ouroboros Sun contests a non-captured Processing Center, they may score points for the "Objective Defense" goal.

Pre-Existing Damage: Priam Company's AWS-8Q Awesome has a non-functional Heat Sink, reducing its combat effectiveness.

    Special Abilities

Blood Stalker: Once per scenario, this pilot may focus entirely on one target unit. They receive a -1 to hit bonus against that target, but have a +2 to hit penalty against any other target. These modifiers last until the end of the turn after the specified target has either retreated or been otherwise defeated.
Hopper: This pilot has trained hard to keep their BattleMech balanced on one leg. If the leg is destroyed, this unit may stay upright if it succeeds at a Piloting check with all applicable penalties. This unit's Movement cannot be reduced below 2MP. Jumping Jack: This unit is more accurate when jumping than normal, having only a +1 to-hit penalty.
Lucky: Sometimes you just find luck when you least expect it. For each point of Lucky, this pilot may reroll one Gunnery or Piloting roll per scenario.
Maneuvering Ace: This pilot has practiced a lot concerning movement, and can make their units do some truly amazing stunts. This pilot can employ the "lateral shift" maneuver at +1 MP if they are a MechWarrior. They also receive a -1 bonus to rolls to prevent skidding/sideslipping.
Marksman: This pilot has trained to be able to pick out a target area on their enemies rather than merely trying to hit. If the pilot does not move, and fires only one weapon on its turn, they may make a called shot as though it has a Targeting Computer. (Consult TW, p.143)
Multi-Tasker: Whenever you want to exploit a target-rich environment, or just need to have your attention divided, it's difficult. However, this pilot reduces all attacks against secondary targets by a -1 To-Hit bonus after working on their ability to split their focus.
Range Master: This pilot has trained to fire more accurately at a different range than normal. They swap their short range penalty for the designated range penalty (either medium or long range this means their short range is now less accurate but their chosen range is more accurate.
Sandblaster: This unit rolls on the Cluster Hit table better than average. At long range they get a +2 bonus, at medium range they get +3 instead, and at short range they get +4 instead.
Sniper: Experience teaches pilots how to lead distant targets better, making it less difficult to hit their targets. This pilot halves all standard range penalties (+1 for medium range, +2 for long range).
Weapon Specialist: Training and time have brought a sense of a particular weapon and how to get the most out of it. This unit has a -2 To-Hit bonus with their chosen weapon.

    Battle Report

    Prelude

    (Image Link)
On reaching the operation area, Maeve Agnes took over tactical command for Priam Company's BattleMechs. The Ouroboros Sun defenders were able to set themselves into a defensive posture, but it was necessary to push ahead anyway. The two Locusts, swifter 'Mechs capable of covering ground quickly, were tasked with taking one of the facilities as battle would commence near the center of the field.

    Turn One

    (Image Link)
The defending commander directed most of the active units to reinforce the central facility, while moving his Quickdraw to their right. One Griffin, the Dervish, and two Vedette tanks joined him to make a significant defense force. Agnes put the two Condor hovertanks on the task of making a quick maneuver towards that control point, as she expected to be able to quickly swing units to support them. The two Locusts followed the previous strategy, using the cliffs to hide from defenders and approach the further processing center. One of the defending Hunchbacks and the Shadow Hawk moved with the other two Vedettes in order to take position to defend that point.

    Turn Two

    (Image Link)
On the right side of Priam Company's advance, Kelly Sedda peeled away from the central battle in order to offer supportive fire against the defenders. The two Locusts moved through the woods, so they could use the trees as cover against the defenders. This prevented the Hunchback and Vedettes from stopping them, and Kelly's Wolfhound quickly changed the chance of defenders making it out safely.

At the center of the line, Agnes' Awesome and "Brick's" Phoenix Hawk focused fire into the nearby Griffin and peeled away large sheets of armor. One of the PPCs managed to set off the missile ammunition, obliterating the 'Mech. Similarly, the Whitworth took a grazing shot to the head by the defending Hunchback and the pilot lost their nerve. The Ouroboros Sun had deployed an UrbanMech as a defensive unit, which was able to keep Priam Company from scoring a quick success.

The Condor tanks ran into serious resistance, and while they were able to neutralize one of the Vedette tanks each suffered serious damage to their motive systems. One of them was rendered immobile, while the other would have their mobility severely hampered. Neither managed to get close enough to the processing center to send their shutdown commands, which meant this would wind up being the final anchor of defense.

    Turn Three

    (Image Link)
Agnes pressed the attack, wading in to try to secure the processing center. Brick and Simone moved in to get physical, despite the presence of both the Hunchback and UrbanMech. The defending Phoenix Hawk was quickly dispatched by Agnes' Awesome, while Brick took a shot from the Hunchback into the center of mass. There was still no chance to overcome the defenders and submit the shutdown codes, however.

Kelly's Wolfhound continues rushing on the Shadow Hawk, blasting into its back and toppling it. With her offering cover, the Locusts are able to seize the advantage and transmit the shutdown order to the facility. This leaves them free to maneuver away from the dangerous Hunchback, which could disable either Light 'Mech in a single shot. At the other flank, Drake maneuvers his Shadow Hawk to try to reach the facility there, as the Condor retreats back towards safety.

    Turn Four

    (Image Link)
Agnes' commands continue pushing Priam Company's forces to their limit on the central facility, as four of the 'Mechs quickly surround it and enter close-quarters combat with the Ouroboros Sun defenders. The Javelin gets to act against the UrbanMech while Brick and Simone try to dance around the Hunchback's main weapon. The amount of damage going into the UrbanMech cored it completely, rendering it a non-issue. Despite their other best efforts, the defenders are overmatched and the facility receives its shutdown instructions. At the flanks, very little happens as the defenders realize their cause is lost and began to make preparations to depart. Kelly landed a few minor shots at the Hunchback as it began withdrawing through the forest, but otherwise the only defending unit not left destroyed was the Shadow Hawk with an unconscious pilot.

    Aftermath

With the Ouroboros Sun beating a hasty retreat, Maeve Agnes yielded the command to the senior officer on the field. Simone Lagrande began ordering a cleanup of the broken units, and noticed many of the 'MechWarriors who should have been still alive had taken their own lives rather than be made captive. The pilot of the Shadow Hawk, however, was already unconscious and thus was restrained and taken prisoner. Lady Reisel would either be pleased or outraged at this, but the day had already been bloody enough.
