Wild Matron

Wild Matron Stepenna Isota

The plains of Eleaseth, south of the Divine Dispute, are a sea of grass, rolling hills, and farm land. Dotted with garden-like cities and trade-outposts, this vast swath of land is largely forgotten by the Nobility of Eleaseth that reside along the southern coast in elaborate port cities, protected by high walls and agnostic magics.

When the Dameskans raided, the Gardens and farmers were largely left to fend for themselves. Sometimes protected by a few of their own magic users, who called themselves The Wilds. They use the Spirit of Eleaseth, invoking the land itself, to turn Damesk back.

It isn't until Stepenna and her group pull them all together that Eleaseth forms something similar to a standing army to maintain a vigil against Dameskan invasion.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Stepenna has aged well and survived with little scars, given the conflict with Damesk. She's always carried herself with a certain bearing, but that's only become more apparent with age and, now, her title as Wild Matron. She dresses simply in earthern tones, in shirts and pants, with well worn leather boots. If she didn't have such a force of personality, she'd be the sort to easily fade into a crowd.

Special abilities

As Wild Matron, Stepenna has mastered the magics of Eleaseth. She would say that the Spirit of Eleaseth answers her call, not that she's mastered anything. As a result, the very ground rises up, trees bend, plants twist, grow, and respond to her. Wild magic is a manipulation of the natual, physical world. As Matron, her ability is unmatched by other Wilds.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Stepenna would consider her early life mundane. She grew up in a communal garden, as many in the plains of Eleaseth. She was taught how to farm, tend herb gardens, and was apart of the larger commune family. Stepenna had plenty of siblings, then, learning and growing alongside some ten other children.

It wasn't unil she was well into her teens that her studies under the other Wilds really started and, in that, she excelled. There were a couple others that were equally as gifted, so it didn't seem out of the norm for Stepenna. It didn't even seem an important gift to train, even though the Commune always spoke of invaders in the North. It was a far away, unseen threat.

Until it wasn't. A raid of Dameskans struck their garden. The Elder was able to hold them off long enough for Stepenna and a couple others to flee, but it was eventually burned to the ground. The smoke from the fire billowing into the sky is a reocurring dream.

It was that event that led Stepenna and the few survivors, her siblings in name if not in blood, to rally and fight back. The early years are frought with losses, bloody skirmishes, and they're little more than minor annoyances to the Dameskans. During this time, they learn on their own, or pick up lessons from various elders in different Communes and Gardens they stay at. Never lingering in any place long enough to call it home.

It's in her late thirties that Stepenna becomes more than a gosspied name. Her and her group of sibling Wilds are known along the northern Commune and Gardens as protectors. Skirmishers, using guerilla tactics. Some have joined them over the years but nothing akin to an army. When a full contingent of Dameskan soldiers march into Eleaseth through the Divine Dispute, they feel they have no join but to meet them in battle. This is a ral invading force. Not a mere raiding party.

The battle is long, bloody, and only Stepenna and her brother survive. The Dameskans are turned back, not wholly defeated, but Eleaseth is protected and she becomes a hero.

From then on, Stepenna is able to call to her all manner of Wild followers. Feeling there is a need for a real fighting force to combat the next time the Dameskans actually invade. And there are more over the next thirty years.
