Courtesan Compact

Cultural Significance

The Courtesan caste in Eleaseth, and those in the The Iron Shadow, are members of the nobility. From an outsider's perspective, the Courtesans are very much their name sake. They attend wealthy nobles, their parties, and flirt along the fringes of the courts and polite society. Amongst them, and unknown by name to any but the members of the Iron Shadow, is the actual ruling class of Eleaseth. They make diplomatic, militaristic, and economic decisions for the whole of Eleaseth, which are then carried out through the connections they've made, be it the General, the Merchant, or any other public figure they wish to use. Some are aware they're puppets, others are not.

That's not to say that their surface function isn't one of oppulant wealth, excess, and a healthy dose of hedonism.

Compact Components

While every Courtesan has their own estate, in their own districts of the port cities, they have the Compacts. They are named so because they are compacted, elaborate, mobile rooms that cater to the needs of the Courtesan while they visit the nobility. It gives them a place to change, freshen up, and essentially retreat to between visits, parties, meetings, and clients. It's a very personal place that, generally, only other Courtesan are ever privy to.

Employment

The driver and guard of the Compact are selected by the Courtesan and are usually someone they know, and trust. While out and about, the driver and guard will remain with the Compact until it returns to the Estate.
"I've been asked what it looks like inside and, in all the years I've been the driver, I still can't tell you. I don't really care. I fix the carriage, I like the horses, the pay is great... What do I care about what she's doing in there or what she's got?
