Experiments of Madness

After a raid on a known residency of the Cult of Chaos, enforcers discovered a secret basement full of laboratory equipment. Along with various broken bottles, rusted tools and a thick layer of dust and cobwebs across the tables a collection of parchments was found tucked away in one of the drawers. These papers revealed the details of experiements on Acuran to speed up the process of the Acuran Madness disease.

Subject 4, Day 2:

  • Date - 4978, Harvest Season, 23rd
  • Time - Early Afternoon
  • Weather Conditions - Overcast skies, mild chill

Subject description - Calm and sedated. Bruise on his head from the concussion spell needed to incapacitated. Slight friction burn on his left wrist due to ropes of binding. Pupils respond to light as suspected, slight discolouration under eyes. 6ft 2" in height, dark hair with signs of stubble emerging under chin. Ring of detection burning bright showing strong magical potential, high possibility of subject being Acuran.
Subject was brought in last night by fellow diciples, manually dragging his body downstairs and setting him up inside the makeshift prison. Strapped to a metallic chair with ropes of binding, mouth tied with a cloth to stop incantations and locked away behind a single iron door with an arcane lock.   After checking the condition of the subject, ensuring he was fit enough to begin experiments, I began injecting the subject with half a vial of madness #328. A mixture of tainted blood, one crushed death feather petal and the blended snout of a gruff. Injected into the largest vein in the hinge of the right arm. Subject began sweating within a minute of injection, followed by violent shivering and gritting his teeth. After 6 minutes, the subject tired himself out and slumped in the chair. His pulse was checked to ensure he was alive, my assitant and I then exited the room and plan to check on his condition in the next hour.

Subject 4, Day 5:

  • Date - 4978, Harvest Season, 26th
  • Time - Late Evening
  • Weather Conditions - Dark, bitter winds, no clouds or rain

Subject description - Veins darkened by fluids injected into the body, blood shot eyes showing more red than white. Increased production of saliva in the mouth, signs of tears running from the eyes and mucus from the nose. Skin paler than the previous day, signs of body shutting down imminently.
The subject's body seems to be taking to madness #328 as suspected. Showing signs of blood draining from the skin and reacting in a similar fashion to the previous subject. Upon injecting the subject today, he showed no signs of hesitation or reaction to madness #328. Potential reasoning could include the body is starting to produce the madness organically, meaning an increase in the disease has no affect on him. Or the body is shutting down internally increasing the need for a new subject imminently.   My professional opinion sees the subjects reactions as a good sign. As he is the first subject to show these symptoms consistently, giving the appearance of a person suffering a general illness as opposed to a disease intended to inflict confusion in the brain. My hope is that the subject will survive long enough for us to start seeing evidence of brain manipulation, only time will tell.

Subject 4, Day 6:

  • Date - 4978, Harvest Season, 27th
  • Time - Early morning
  • Weather Conditions - Dark, bitter winds, slight drizzle of rain

Subject description - Subject inflicted with three deep lacerations on lower back, left shoulder and upper left arm. Grazing on three knuckles on left hand and four on right hand, signs of bleeding occured on both hands. Heavy pulse causing loss of blood in upper right leg, wound cauterized to keep the subject alive.
The subject was able to get the upper hand of my assistant, allowing for a chance to escape. Madness #328 has shown signs of brain functionality to slow compared to normal comparison but still capable of critical thinking. Power levels seem somewhat diminished only showing signs of gestural magic compared to common incantations. I sounded the alarm and sent six fellow disciples out to hunt him down through the empty fields. After ten minutes of waiting, the disciples returned carrying the subject covered in blood.   They had been more violent than anticipated causing several injuries to the subject. My attempts of healing have proven worthy enough to take the subject from critically injured to a more stable condition. I have my assistant and one fellow disciple checking on his vital signs every half and hour for the next day to ensure we do not lose the subject. Until his condition is stable, injections of madness #328 have been delayed until further notice.

Subject 4, Day 8:

  • Date - 4978, Harvest Season, 29th
  • Time - Mid Morning
  • Weather Conditions - Daystar burning in the sky, sharpness in the air, crows gathering
Subject description - Deceased
Injuries sustained during the subject's attempted escape have deemed too severe for healing magic and potions to prove useful. It can be noted that cause of death is not due to madness #328 injected being injected into his veins. Before the escape, subject showed promising signs of his body handling the daily injections. Results will be logged and sent to the high priests of Chaos to review. Verdict on madness #328 will either see the go ahead for stage two of testing or the search for a new subject to conduct research on madness #329.   My personal belief is that the subject and the latest vials have shown results worthy of stage two testing. I have already sent my assistant to scout for viable locations for the experiments and spend my downtime perfecting the methodology. The anticipation of the results will keep me up for the following nights I am sure.
