King Morlan II

King Morlan II was the king of Estaria from 1732 to 1769 SE, following the reign of King Eiknir the Great.

Reign

Morlan II was the first Estarian King to share his entire rule with the Estarian House of Parliament, which was less than a year old when he was coronated. Morlan embraced the new representative system, recordedly calling Estaria's people "A people strong enough to stand for their own." Morlan never used his veto power during his near four decade reign.

Medical Reform

In 1743, Morlan II's granddaughter, Victoria, took ill with a serious respiratory infection. She was taken into the care of Mother Isabel, who was a relatively unknown figure at the time. Her well-trained doctors and strict standard of care impressed the king and Victoria was able to make a full recovery.   Morlan was so delighted with his granddaughter's care that he requested that parliament codify her medical reforms into law, leading to the first nationally recognized medical standards in Estaria in 1747 SE. The new laws required at least four years of education in an accredited university before one could legally be recognized as a doctor, five years for surgeons. Universities were also forced to share medical discoveries as part of a national decomodification of medical knowledge. Lastly, Morlan appointed a Royal Council of Physicians to oversee and approve medical texts.

Legacy

To historians, Morlan the second is remembered more for what he didn't do than what he did. The most noteworthy aspect of his long reign is his lack of interference in Estarian Parliament, at a time when Landren was struggling with political upheaval from pro-monarchy and pro-democratic factions. It's believed that Morlan II expanded parliament's power out of respect for his father's legacy.
