Musmizh

Musmizh, or 'magic' in the Vimali tongue, is a mineral resource found underwater. Because of its difficult-to-access location underwater, this resource was only exploited by the Vimali for a long time. This gave them a significant advantage in their battles along the coasts. This resource did come with drawbacks, though, as it required the use of souls and sacrifices in order to access the magic. This led to the Vimali tradition of sacrificing one of two twins at birth, binding the soul of the sacrificed twin. These objects became known as 'mak rivlo' or 'soul stones', capable of harnessing powerful necromantic magic. In modern times, soulstones are illegal in most countries and considered contraband (though they are heavily sought after by certain groups).
Before the Age of Two, this resource was in short supply only because the Vimali were the only ones capable of producing it and kept it out of the hands of land-dwellers. Now, in the Post-Imperial Age, musmizh still serves an important purpose after the discovery of an alternative use-- magical technology. Musmizh is still heavily used by artificers to create new technology and imbue it with magic. Modern magics can be infused into musmizh without the need for souls or sacrifices; this then amplifies this magical power, allowing it to be harnessed in new ways beyond the capabilities of normal magic. This resource is harvested in the Maritime Principalities but is usually traded to Tharkenwod and the Society for the Advancement of High Technology for their research.

Musmizh is described as a softly glowing, dark purple-colored mineral. It is usually easy to find underwater because of its common presence in dark areas.
