White Gryphon Settlement in Vestra | World Anvil

White Gryphon

Founding of White Gryphon

The original inhabitants here were the refugees who escaped the final cataclysmic explosion of Whyril and Kelvern’s strongholds. Cut off from the rest of Umberfell by a thick jungle and the Teeth (a smallish mountain range), most trade and interaction happens via boats or gryphon flights.   After being stranded, the five races that escaped built White Gryphon; the gryphons for which it is named (100), the La'naris elves (2000), several tribes of humans (500) a variant of Hertasi (thinner and frilled), as well as a small population of In'alli, a sort of bloodhound/gnome centaur.

The Chapters of Civilization

Forged in the aftermath of the Cataclysm the five races, already used to living and working together, they chose to rebuild as a collective. As they did so, most of the functions of the city itself were taken over by the guilds for the various professions. The city is ruled by a council of nine lead by a Prime Voice. The nine are drawn from the various professions while the Prime Voice is elected by the entire adult population for a 3 year term.
Crafters
Woodcarvers, blacksmiths, potters, artisans, artists, and more all find themselves within this guild. These folk create the goods for trade and the needs of the city.
Construction
Builders, architects, and other construction workers maintain the city, both for municipal needs as well as personal needs. In addition this guild houses the engineers and shipwrights.
Farmers
One of the three guilds dealing with food, the farmers are those concerned with growing things. Built into the cliff face beyond some planned gardens there was little room for such activities within the city proper, but they maintain a large cleared area at the top.
Fisherman
The second guild dealing with food, it is unique and would not have existed if not for location of White Gryphon, this coop has grown with the city to a substantial fleet. Surprisingly this guild also includes the trading fleet.
Healers
All those who are concerned with healing, this guild includes both herbalists and needle and thread surgeons as well as magical talent for those of both the sentient races as well as animals. Special care is needed for both the gryphons and the In'alli as they are created races who are occasionally prone to easily addressed issues. In addition to the body workers, this guild also includes mind healers who can address emotional and mental issues.
Hunters & Herders
This is the third of the guilds dealing with food, focusing on livestock. With a population of large carnivores, having the beasts needed to feed them is an important job. While a strange combination, this guild also includes those who go out to hunt the wildlife. The jungle includes a number of both predator and prey.
Mages
Wizards, artificers, and clerics make up this guild and control much of the magical talent within the city. Together they serve the city and explore the boundaries of their craft.
Scribes
One of the most important guilds within the city, the scribes serve in many of the bureaucratic functions of the city, but also includes librarians, teachers, and historians.
Wing Guard
They are protected by the Wing Guard, who function as both a scout force and a local police. All of the races participate, though it is unusual to see any of the In'alli outside of the city and nearby farms and the Kassas are by nature pacifists, but are often willing to serve in supporting function

Modern Culture

Since the founding, the elven and human races has married and comingled to the point where they all consider themselves La'naris. Of somewhat surprise is that the city of White Gryphon is built to accommodate all of the citizen races, not just the La'naris, but also the Gryphons, the In'alli, and the Kassas   The general attitude of the city is friendly, but some citizens can be a bit isolationist. As a city-state, they are primarily self-supporting, but do practice some trade with Djedbura.   The city itself is carved into the cliff face, with dwellings vanishing into the rock and balustraded walkways and stairs linking the various levels. Planters filled with spilling green vines and flowers are scattered around the city and from a distance the entire layout of the city appears to be to be a gryphon wings outstretched. At night, street-lights twinkle like fireflies among the wings. Docks are built into the tail feathers and the city sports a fairly large fishing fleet. A series of large cranes were built along the edge of the cliff and a series of farms and paddocks filled the large clearing atop the cliff.
