Corrupted Gods
In the early days of the universe, the Corrupted Gods were benevolent, or at least neutral entities. They began to change as they realized how much power they held over mortals, and how they could use the people of Erden for their own personal gains. Their corruption caused them to slide into the extreme ends of their domains, and their cruelty grew worse and worse. Finally, the most powerful among them, Zargon, committed the first ever act of deicide by killing the creator-deity Asgorath. This set off the Dawn War, a literally world-shattering conflict that destroyed civilizations, pantheons, and continents. But because of their lack of unity, the Corrupted Gods fell apart once Zargon was killed by The Twelve. One by one, the good gods routed them, and they established the Veil to prevent any gods, good or evil, from manifesting directly on Erden to cause so much havoc again.
After the Dawn War, twelve of the Corrupted remained. They continue to influence mortals and oppose the Twelve at every turn, but now they are limited to acting through mortal agents instead of acting directly. Some of the races who followed them during the Dawn War still worship them even now, and there are innumerable cults hidden in dark corners of the world.
As well as the main twelve Corrupted, some people still worship their leader, Zargon. They call him the Returner, and they believe that enough sacrifices and other depraved acts of worship will empower him enough to bring him back.
