Vilstrung
Vilstrung is the far northern continent of Tregaron. It is the homeland of the Villish people and is known for its harsh, cold climates and vast pine forests.
Vilstrung is by far the most Fae-influenced country in Tregaron. While Fae are found universally across the continent, the Villish wilds are a haven for all manner of different magical creatures -- one of the many reasons why the Villish people form tight-knit communities.
Geography and Climate
The Villish landscape is bitter, cold, and unpleasant. The most temperate portion of Vilstrung is the coastal highlands, which are prone to cold drafts and strong winds. A majority of the eastern continent is entirely layered beneath thick permafrost, with the far eastern peninsula being entirely covered in a sheet of ice. The western highlands are mostly made up of rocky plains and coastal cliffs that overlook the sea, while central Vilstrung is entirely dominated by pine forests that once extended all the way to the eastern peninsula until the founding of Valmastre; before that, a common Villish saying was you can walk through the forest until the needles turn white; showing that the forest extended all the way towards the very edge of the massive ice sheet that smothers the far east. Most Villish settlements are concentrated in either Valmastre or Western Vilstrung; the eastern half of Vilstrung is borderline uninhabitible.Flora/Fauna
Vilstrung is home to a fairly diverse cast of fauna and flora that are specially adapted to the cold. A majority of the fauna are generally much larger than the fauna found in other countries; primary examples include Villish Greatwolves; shaggy furred canines that are much, much larger than your common wolf. Highland stags are also legendary; they were often called wagon busters due to their antlers being so great that they'd often tear through trade caravans when aggravated. Flora is also likewise adapted to the cold and most notably developed chemical elements that allow for the melting of permafrost and snow.Magical Beasts
The Villish frontier is notorious for being filled with dangerous threats that make it generally dangerous without careful navigation. While the large wildlife will pose threats to any adventurer, the Fae are generally the larger problem. Most notoriously are the Mylings and Mimics; creatures that steal the voices and bodies of their victims so that they may continue living their stolen life. This is one of the many reasons why Villish socieites are often tightly packed, condensed, and family-oriented; many Villish homes often hold a house of at six people minimum, with an upwards of 20 that can live within their longhouses. Their cities are also likewise massive for a similar reason; while there is very little in the way of rural communities, Villish towns or cities are often cramped closely together to ensure safety in numbers.Governing Bodies
Vilstrung is primarily under control of the Huntsman's Court; it is generally a democratic country that settles most disputes through means of voting and careful agreement. Due to recent events in history, Villish people are incredibly apprehensive of monarchs or rule held in the hands of one person. Taxes are collected by members of the court, whom utilise the wealth to gather resources from neighboring countries to help expand and maintain infrastructure.Hatred of Kings
Before the Villish people were under control of the Huntsman's Court, they were under control of a King and his royal family. This King was treated as the father of the Villish people, and commanded much respect from his people; to this day, many Villish people find themselves somewhat divided and longing for a time where they could look up towards their King as a just and kind ruler. Unfortunately, the recent outbreak of Vampirism lead to the fall of the royal family when it partook in the curse. The family fed on its citizens and savagely hunted its own people for sport. Since then, a massive civil uprising ravaged Vilstrung, leading to the destruction of the royal family and, subsequently, the collapse of a monarchy until the Huntsman's Court took control of Vilstrung. Many Villish people view Kings as the antithesis of what they stand for; no rule should be held in the hands of one man, but they, as a people, should work to endure, thrive, and survive as not a fractured people under the rule of one despot, but as one cohesive family.
