Naerion

Loremaster

Loremaster of Clan Enlanefel, Mage-Artisan of the Gnarley

“Magic is the breath of thought, shaped into purpose. To wield it is not to conquer—it is to remember.”
— Naerion, addressing young apprentices at Oakvein’s Aetherium Hall

The Mage Who Walks Between Worlds

Among the secretive sages of Clan Enlanefel, Naerion is the most widely traveled and the most openly brilliant. A wood elf male, nearing seven centuries of age, Naerion walks the the Gnarley Forest and beyond as both historian and artisan—crafting wonders of arcane beauty and restoring forgotten relics of mythic times.

While Faeluneth guides the soul and dream, Naerion commands the shape of magic itself. Whether fashioning rings under moonlight or negotiating arcane treaties with Celene’s nobility, Naerion moves with quiet intensity and the curiosity of a scholar whose questions are never fully answered.

Appearance and Bearing

Naerion wears robes of shimmering starlight thread, enchanted to subtly shift hue between twilight blue and glimmering silver. His face, though lined with time, holds the sharp brightness of undiminished intellect. He walks with a staff of carved bronzewood, inlaid with moonstones and etched with ancient runes of Corellon.

  • Race: Wood Elf
  • Class: Cleric of Corellon Larethian 9 / Wizard (Artificer/Maker Tradition) 12
  • Age: 688 years
  • Symbols: His staff bears the sigil of Corellon Larethian: a silver crescent beneath a sapphire starburst
  • Aesthetic: Wears multiple minor magic items of his own creation—rings, cloak, boots, and gloves all subtly enchanted

Role in Clan Enlanefel

Naerion is the Master Artificer of Oakvein, and one of the six ruling Loremasters of the clan. His duties revolve around the preservation and advancement of magical knowledge, the recovery and identification of ancient artefacts, and the training of the next generation of spellcasters—whether divine or arcane.

  • Position: Loremaster of Artifice, Historian of Spellcraft
  • Domain: Arcane research, enchanted item creation, relic recovery
  • Home: The Aetherium Hall of Oakvein—part library, part workshop, part sanctum
  • Public Role: Offers enchantment services for sacred causes; evaluates artefacts from across the Flanaess

Background and Life of Study

Born in a hidden glade on the eastern slopes of the Kron Hills, Naerion showed early promise in both divine and arcane matters—a rarity even among elves. Initially apprenticed to the priests of Corellon Larethian, his hunger for ancient knowledge drew him to wizardry as well. Eventually, his journeys took him far from Enlanefel lands: from the spell libraries of Enstad, to the deep ruins of the Cairn Hills, and the Whispering Vaults beneath Highfolk.

  • Early Years: Studied under twilight priests of Corellon; apprenticed in artifact lore
  • Wanderings: Traveled to Enstad, the Yatil libraries, and even consulted Greyhawk Guild Mages
  • Return to Oakvein: Became Loremaster 212 years ago; has stepped down and returned to the seat twice
“To forget is a sin. Magic, when remembered rightly, is the soul of civilization.”

Personality and Motivations

Naerion is quietly proud, deeply thoughtful, and fiercely devoted to his gods and his people. While not as enigmatic as Faeluneth, he is more direct in conversation—though no less poetic in expression. He often mentors younger elves with intensity, pushing them to challenge their assumptions and pursue personal mastery.

  • Disposition: Wry, curious, sharp-tongued but warm-hearted
  • Behavior: Keeps magical journals, debates ethics of spellcraft, dislikes political manipulation
  • Beliefs: Magic is a sacred inheritance, not a weapon to be wielded carelessly
  • Motivations: Protect elven magical heritage; oppose desecration of ancient artefacts by cults or tomb-robbers

Magic and Mastery

Naerion’s fusion of clerical devotion and arcane innovation makes him unique even among the Seldarine’s chosen. His divine channeling manifests in the creation of living magical objects—each imbued with purpose. His spells blend celestial inspiration with precise arcane theory.

  • Divine Focus: Protection, inspiration, beauty, and the artistry of Corellon Larethian
  • Arcane Specialties: Item crafting, abjuration, history of magic, identification and repair of magical relics
  • Notable Creations:
  • Ring of Memory’s Flame – Stores visions of the last 3 bearers who wore it
  • Starweft Cloak – Allows teleportation once per day to any moonlit forest known to the wearer
  • Gleaming Lash – A whip-like wand that disrupts illusions and glyphs

Allies and Political Relationships

Naerion is one of the few Enlanefel elves with active diplomatic ties to Celene, owing to his long-standing friendship with Onselven, the Royal Wizard of Celene. He has also met with members of the Council of Verbobonc, albeit cautiously, preferring to work through intermediaries when dealing with humans.

Relationships with the Other Loremasters

Faeluneth Larethil — Seer of the Moonbow

Naerion and Faeluneth share a long-standing mutual respect forged from spiritual and arcane collaboration. Where Faeluneth’s guidance comes from visions and divine dreams, Naerion grounds his counsel in craft, logic, and deep arcane law. Their debates often shape council decisions, balancing vision with precision.

  • Shared Values: Tradition, wisdom, guardianship of elven knowledge
  • Contrasts: Visionary faith vs. methodical arcana
  • Interaction: Faeluneth sanctifies relics Naerion restores; she often tempers his riskier experiments

Synriel — Warden of the Verdant Flow

Naerion and Synriel maintain a polite rivalry, rooted in differing worldviews: she champions the wild and the elemental, while he seeks to shape and wield magic through structure. Despite this, Naerion values her insights into ley line disruptions and the primal magic of the Old Forest, often consulting her when crafting artefacts with deep natural resonance.

  • Shared Interests: Magical ecology, ancient places of power
  • Tensions: Artifice vs. naturalism, control vs. harmony
  • Interaction: Occasional friction over magical interference in natural sites

Nemoi — Dreamwalker of the Spire

Nemoi and Naerion are the most frequent collaborators on magical theory. While Naerion is grounded in the tangible crafting of items, Nemoi’s dream-lore and planar geometry provide theoretical frameworks that Naerion refines into practical enchantment. Their intellectual kinship forms one of the more productive alliances on the council.

  • Shared Values: Arcane innovation, planar understanding, metaphysical curiosity
  • Contrasts: Naerion seeks function; Nemoi, mystery
  • Interaction: Frequent correspondence on Feywild harmonics and interplanar anchors

Lian — Keeper of the Eternal Record

Lian and Naerion stand as philosophical foils. Lian defends elven heritage and the need to safeguard sacred traditions, while Naerion seeks to evolve and reinterpret them. Though they disagree often, their dialogue is respectful and rooted in mutual dedication to elven survival.

  • Shared Interests: Magic as legacy, the importance of spiritual ethics
  • Tensions: Preservation vs. progress; ritual purity vs. applied innovation
  • Interaction: Regular debates over the use of pre-Sundering artefacts and sealed conjurations

Avinor — Historian of Collapse

Naerion values Avinor’s insight into the dangers of ancient magic but finds his caution frustrating. They often examine relics together—Avinor checking for cultic or historical corruption, Naerion assessing practical value and enchantability. Despite differences, they’ve jointly prevented several artefact-related disasters.

  • Shared Interests: Elven relics, ancient wars, cultic dangers
  • Tensions: Academic caution vs. pragmatic use of forbidden knowledge
  • Interaction: Collaborate on artefact classification; wary trust defines their partnership

Current Concerns (576 CY)

Naerion has grown increasingly alarmed by rumors of raided tombs and stolen relics from the old Cairn Hills and Wild Verge. He suspects a growing underground market for magical artefacts, possibly manipulated by cultists. Though unaware of the reawakening of the Temple of Elemental Evil, he’s begun a quiet investigation—scrying on known relic smugglers and seeking patterns.

  • Relic Theft: Alarmed by desecrations in sacred ruins
  • Cult Activity: Believes artefact theft is coordinated, possibly by Elemental cults
  • Protective Measures: Crafting “wards of forgetting” around key Enlanefel sites to prevent discovery
