Avinor
Loremaster (a.k.a. of Broken Empires)
Warden of Lost Wars, Priest of the Restoring Blade
“The past is not buried. It waits—deep in the bones of the hills, in the names whispered at altars no longer standing. To understand what is coming, we must walk backward with open eyes.”
— Avinor, speaking to the Loremasters of Oakvein on the rise of ancient cults
The Historian of Collapse
Of all the Loremasters of Clan Enlanefel, Avinor is the most concerned with the past’s darkest shadows. A wood elf cleric and wizard equally steeped in divine truth and mortal ruin, Avinor is the foremost elven authority on the fall of ancient elven kingdoms, the rise of Ur-Flannae sorcery, and the cults of the Whispered One.
Though his study is somber, Avinor’s mission is one of preservation and protection: to shield the elves of the Gnarley Forest from repeating the calamities of old, and to help others recognize the signs of ancient evils reawakening. Among elves, he is revered as a chronicler. Among other races, he is a respected but wary diplomat—one of the few Enlanefel willing to walk among humans to understand the faiths and failings of younger peoples.
Appearance and Bearing
Avinor’s demeanor is solemn and his eyes always alert, as though watching for ghosts only he can see. His skin has a slight bronze hue, and his long, dark auburn hair is bound back with cords of silver and jet. He wears a robe of deep forest green laced with glimmering red-gold trim—the colors of old Celene—and bears the holy symbol of Corellon Larethian fashioned from shattered mithril: the crescent blade broken at the tip and reforged.
- Class: Cleric of Corellon Larethian 8 / Wizard (Divination) 8
- Eyes: Amber with faint gold flecks—"the eyes of a war-rememberer," some say
- Attire: Formal, old-fashioned; often wears relics and tokens from ancient battlefields
- Aura: A weight of memory surrounds him; birds often go silent when he speaks
Role in Clan Enlanefel
As Keeper of Lost Histories, Avinor is tasked with maintaining the clan’s knowledge of elven wars, fallen realms, human cults, and interfaith diplomacy. He is a bridge between generations, a watcher for ancient signs, and a theologian of comparative pantheons, frequently called upon to advise when strange relics surface or when cultic activity stirs.
- Position: Loremaster of History and Collapse
- Focus: Ancient wars, cultic resurgence, human religions, and forgotten divine covenants
- Location: The Stone of Echoes, a relic hall deep beneath Oakvein filled with ash-inscribed records, broken banners, and recovered cult texts
- External Role: One of the few Loremasters who regularly liaises with Verbobonc’s archivists and Celene’s Watchers of Memory
Background and Formation
Avinor was born in the aftermath of a blight that swept through southern Gnarley. His mother—a priestess of Corellon—died defending a grove from summoned horrors tied to the Whispered One. This loss marked him for a path of sacred scholarship, dedicated to understanding how power corrupts and cults rise.
His early studies focused on the wars that led to the sundering of elven dominion in the Flanaess, including the rise of the Suel Imperium, the fall of Lendore Isle, and the human betrayal during the Rain of Colorless Fire. Later, he became a leading scholar of Vecna ’s early cultic manifestations, and the ritual remnants of the Ur-Flannae—the protohuman sorcerer-kings who carved fell dominions before the Age of Light.
- Formative Loss: Mother slain by cultist-summoned fiend
- Major Research: Ur-Flannae glyph-languages, Suel–Elven war accords, Vecnan funerary rites
- Theological Studies: Compares the elven pantheon to human divine myths, especially Greyhawkian heresies
Personality and Beliefs
Avinor is focused, somber, and unflinchingly honest. Though not unfriendly, he speaks rarely and with great precision, weighing the future against the sins of history. His faith in Corellon Larethian is not one of exultation, but atonement and reconstruction. He believes that knowledge is the shield of the soul, and history the best weapon against repetition.
- Disposition: Quiet, grave, deeply thoughtful
- Tone: Measured, scholarly, often poetic in elegy
- Core Beliefs:
- Elvenkind’s arrogance hastened their downfall
- Evil does not die—it waits, forgotten but fermenting
- The Seldarine weep when their children forget
Magic and Abilities
Avinor’s divine spells reflect memory, protection, and radiant revelation, while his wizardry focuses on detection, pattern-seeking, and arcane countermeasures. He is a skilled ritualist, and few can match his ability to identify, ward, or break Vecnan glyphs and Ur-Flannae bindings.
- Cleric Spells (Corellon):
- Spirit Guardians, Beacon of Hope, Legend Lore, Divination, Warding Bond
- Wizard Spells (Divination):
- Detect Magic, Scrying, Counterspell, Arcane Eye, Banishment
- Unique Abilities:
- Echo of the Betrayer – Once per long rest, can force a creature to relive a moment of guilt (Wis save or stunned and vulnerable to radiant for 1 round)
- Archivist’s Mandala – An enchanted scroll that glows in the presence of forbidden lore or cultic sigils
- Ceremony of the Last Banner – A funerary rite that prevents the soul from being stolen or reshaped by undeath or cultic reawakening
Political and Religious Influence
Avinor is one of the few Enlanefel trusted by elven historians and human theologians alike. His contacts include scholars in Enstad, archivists of Verbobonc, and even wary Druids of the Gnarley Forest who seek his insight when blood magic sigils appear near sacred groves. He maintains quiet, respectful contact with clerics of Rao and Delleb , and hates the Whispered One with religious fury.
- Faeluneth Larethil: Deep mutual trust; their perspectives—prophetic vs. historical—often form the heart of clan decisions
- Naerion: Respects his crafting skill, wary of his interest in artefacts from blighted sites
- Synriel: Shared concern over elemental and cultic incursions
- Verbobonc: Maintains a cautious liaison with the Temple of Cuthbert’s loremasters
- Enemies: Cults of the Whispered One, defilers of elven tombs, practitioners of forbidden necromancy
Current Concerns (576 CY)
Avinor believes the return of cult activity in Nulb and along the Wild Verge is not merely chaotic—it follows ancient Ur-Flannae ley-sequence theory, used to weaken divine borders before a major summoning. He suspects this is not a new cult, but a revival—and that elements of the Temple of Elemental Evil are being used to hide Vecnan resurgence.
- Investigation:
- Old Flannae sigils appearing near Wild Verge
- Cultists in Nulb leaving offerings at Suel–Flan hybrid shrines
- Whispered rumors of “a voice in bone, returning through fire”
- Requested Aid: Needs adventurers to retrieve a long-lost Ur-Seal of the Hollow Star, last seen beneath the ruins of an abandoned elven outpost razed in the Suel Wars
