Spirit Speaking Spell in Vellikka | World Anvil

Spirit Speaking

"...and so they sit and wait. Sometimes they are lucky, and other times they aren't, but every time, they take something away from the experience."
— From a letter by Bukahnah Travelling Vault

Casting

A person sits within or next to a Place of Spirits, holding or focusing on the item they have brought with them. Once they have found a sense of peace, either by themselves or with the others they are there with, they reach out a hand and ask for guidance from the spirits.   Sometimes they ask a question, perhaps they are at a crossroads and need guidance, or perhaps they just need to feel like there is something more.   They may ask it aloud, but more often they are quiet during this time, and reach out emotionally rather than speaking.

Effect

The spell has no effect. Sometimes the caster feels as though they have received a message of some kind, or a confirmation, or feel a presence, and sometimes they don't. But these are very much psychosomatic, and not caused by anything within the spell.

Reptutation

While many in Vellikka believe in Spirit Speaking, there are some who don't. Spirits aren't thought of as being particularly interested in the lives of people, so the chances of them responding is already expected to be low.   However. those who don't believe usually don't shout about it. Generally if something doesn't directly affect them, the Vellich tend to let each other be, and the same is true here. If some people want to spend time casting a spell which gives them comfort, then that's up to them.

The person casting this spell often carries something with them to the nearest Place of Spirits that holds some special meaning. They no longer follow the idea of Spirit Offerings, but it helps to have a focus for Spirit Speaking.

Nice. I feel like this is a vindication of little good-luck rituals. Even if they objectively do nothing, the effect of performing them is valuable.

Yes! Exactly, it has as much effect as the people performing it believe it will have. Thank you so much for reading.
