Rereth
Description
Rereth is on the smaller side, an at glance doesn't catch the eye. But he always moves like he owns the place, and several scars tell that he can be violent - and win - if needed.History
Rereth was born to a family of farmers during the early years of the Tunnel War. The war was a shadow over his youth, but fortunately for him, it was over before he was old enough to fight. He, along with his family, could relax: no more war, no fear of conscription, no fear of Hexagon forces arriving at night to attack them during their sleep.
While peace initially seemed liberating, all changed once Brighid was crowned. Rereth's hometown got a new fortress, filled with vespoids, who regularly patrolled the streets. They did keep the peace, but they also taxed the necrites even more than the war effort had, and punished any necrite who criticized them.
That was understandable. The Detrinian Empire had done a lot of damage to the Hexagon, it made sense that the Hexagon wants them to repair the damage. And it was understandable that the soldiers far from home didn't like people complaining about their jobs.
But then the vespoids went after the church. The local priest had helped everyone in the village, kept the morale up and conducted all of the traditional festivals was beaten after an argument with the vespoids. Soon after, he fled. His appretice stayed, and while she did her best, it was not the same - particularly since the vespoids sent one of their priests to the church to keep watch.
Rereth could have forgiven or accepted everything else, but what the vespoids did to the church was unforgivable. He could no longer keep his head down and stay silent: he had to act. He had a simple plan: even after the Tunnel War, vespoids are used to flying, not digging. Rereth could move underground to stay hidden. He just had to pick his target very carefully...
But he didn't have to work alone: all other necrites were just as outraged as he was. He gathered a few of the most capable, leaving the other necrites out to provide cover for the rebels. It started simply: he stole some food from the fortress. A few bits wouldn't be noticed, at least soon. Coins followed, then weapons... The guards started to notice that someone had been stealing from them. The place was getting too hot, so Rereth and his companions left their hometown for new locations.
They never stayed for long: they made a few contacts in the settlement, attacked the vespoids once and left. No vespoid could track them, as there was no pattern to their attacks, and thanks to their use of tunnels. And, of course, all necrites were ready to protect them.
But soon they found a problem: they had been too good at stealing. They had plenty of weapons and armor, but selling them back to the vespoids was not possible. They needed a permanent place to hide them. And so Rereth led the start of the rebellion south, to the less tamed lands of Sweetwood. They dug an underground lair far from civilization where they could rest and hide their loot. But a place like that would be an easy target for the occupiers, much like their fortresses had been to the rebels. So they dug out several other hideouts, and countless tunnels to travel unseen.
From that point onwards, the rebellion got far more organized. The rebels struck again, this time nearly simultaneously in several locations, using their contacts in each place to bolster their numbers. This time, the main goal was deceit: they wanted the occupiers to believe that there was no unified resistance, just bold individuals and common bandits. They succeeded: the vespoids spent countless hour searching the areas for the thieves, while the rebels had already fled south.
Present
Rereth has kept a low profile for years, but he has worked tirelessly. The Tunnel War proved that the necrites couldn't beat the Royal Hexagon in a fair fight. He's been carefully amassing people, resources, contacts and maps, so that one day, the rebels could take out all of the occupiers in a single strike, and finally free Sweetwood from the Hexagon forces.
There is only one place Rereth hasn't accepted help from: the Theocracy of the Wurm. The Theocracy has offered him all kinds of aid, but Rereth thinks that all gifts from the Theocracy are poisoned. This all started from the mistreatment of his hometown's priest: how could Rereth say that he's avenging him if he takes help from the Wurm?
