Sap of Divinity

Sap of Divinity is the only known cure for The Rot. Its discovery is thought to have saved thousands from the debilitating and ultimately fatal disease. The Sap is administered to patients exclusively at the Goldenglow Infirmary in Cirranne, which has made the city a site of pilgrimage for those afflicted with the Rot, much to the distaste of its inhabitants.   Known only to a privileged few within the The Holy Order of Tighru, the ingredients of the Sap of Divinity are a well-kept secret. This is not only to preserve the Holy order's monopoly on the highly sought-after cure but also to conceal the cruel means by which it is produced. The active, and principal ingredient of the Sap is a compound only found in the blood of those capable of Auguring, thus making it both scarce and difficult to come by. However, the The Holy Order of Tighru is in a unique position in this respect due to their historical, often sanctioned, persecution and imprisonment of known Augurers. Under the leadership of their current High Priest, Valdemar Covac, this practice has been escalating, even before the discovery of the Sap.   It is thought that the extraction of Sap from imprisoned subjects takes place at Fort Solace, an old naval fort which the Holy Order purchased from the The Protectorate of Vanelle before converting it into a prison for captured augurers. Due to the Fort being so tightly controlled by the Holy Order, it is possible that there is no knowledge of what goes on there within Protectorate authorities. The official line is that Fort Solace is a prison facility for dangerous prisoners run by the Holy Order on behalf of the Protectorate.   Extraction of the compound that makes up the Sap of Divinity means the extraction of blood from live subjects. And it is important that they are kept alive in order to increase the production and quality of the Sap. Blood taken from deceased subjects is significantly less potent than that of live subjects, and a dead subject cannot produce more than one blood harvest. The 'sap' is carefully separated from the blood through a series of chemical treatments after which it is diluted, perfumed and bottled. Each bottle containing just enough to cure one person of the Rot.   It is not hard to imagine why the Holy Order would prefer not to divulge how their miracle cure is produced. Strangely enough, however, the Sap of Divinity is not a venture from which they have profited. They will administer the cure to anyone who asks for it, free of charge, as long as they wait their turn. This has no doubt contributed to the steady flow of afflicted into the city of Cirranne.
