Witches

The Sects of the Magical

Origins

Witches, powerful Mortals who wield the magical forces of the world, have been around for as long as Vampires. They have long existed in families and small covens until forming into the Sects of today beginning with the first coming together in 1200s AD.

The Sects

While the Sects themselves are not officially as ancient as some of the other organized groups amongst the species, their later origin does not make them lesser. Witches merely existed in smaller groups until they began coming together in larger, familial groups as bloodlines began to spread. They have gone into hiding several times over the years during different crusades against those using magic - which a few real witches did get caught up in alongside innocent Mortals - but having settled into hiding just beneath the surface in modern times.   Read more about The Sects.

Magic

Of the seven bloodlines that run through the seven Sects, each wields a power of their own alongside the general spell craft and rites (usually requiring the help of mystical emblems, foreign tongues, and foci) that is common knowledge.   It also should be noted that a witch's magic can have problems around electricity. Most times a witch will be fine near anything electrical but if experiencing strong emotions or using a great deal of magic, a witch can blow out light bulbs, cause circuit breakers to spark, and even take out a city block's electricity.

MUFHET

Wield water magic and can draw water from any source to use in their defense. Drawing the water from a living being, however, is considered a crime and any offender will be punished by the leader of the Sect. One must have a care with this magic as water is sometimes temperamental depending upon the tides.

WARD

Cursed with the Sight, able to see future, past, and present. They do have power over this ability in that they can touch objects or people in order to See but the most powerful of visions are random. Overuse of their power can cause mental issues and even insanity.

OTTOLINI

Healers, able to use their own magic to heal the wounds of another. One must be careful, however, not to overuse it as draining away too much of one's own magic can cause it to never return. The strain of healing too many, too quickly can also cause death.

HANCOCK

Fire starters, able to draw the magic from within themselves to create the flames. One must be careful with the power, however, for fire can still burn even its master.

SCHERER

Wield air magic and are considerably one of the most powerful of witches since they have access to their power virtually everywhere. Chemicals in the air, however, do sometimes mess with their magic and cause spells to go wrong.

OLLYETT

Able to harness the powers of the earth and are the other most powerful of the witches. Not only can they shatter the earth but plants also come to their command. One must be careful how kindly one wields earth magic, however, as the Mother Earth is sometimes not happy with its use.

CORNWALL

Shape shifters. The number of forms one can attain depends on both the magical ability, amount of magic, and how well one can recall the shape of an animal. Shifting to human forms is impossible for anyone of mortal Cornwall blood to learn but it is theorized by older Cornwalls that a Turned witch of their blood could gain such an ability given enough practice and time.

Laws of Magic

Laws are, for the most part, set down by each Sect and kept enforced by the Sect's Leader and the Elders that each Sect elects. There are, however, a few laws that all Sects agree upon.
Magic is not to be used to harm another witch. To do so is against all we hold dear and were built upon.

Magic is neither to be used to harm those that are innocent, no matter what they may be.

Naming Conventions

Most witches tend to keep the name of their Sect as their surname but there are a few who choose not to so blatantly give away who they are, taking instead a random name or that of their non-witch parent.

Witchblood Hunters

Those born of a Clan and a Sect generally refer to themselves by however they were raised and take the name of that side but claim both.
