The Memorial Tree

The ancient oak standing in the center of the Chimera Agency complex is known as the "memorial tree", and is hung with lanterns representing the hunters from the agency who have fallen in the line of duty. Each night, before the hunters leave for their patrols, the lanterns are lit and the hunters renew their promise to continue the work that has now been left to them.

Purpose / Function

The Memorial Tree is specific to the Chimera Agency, their location for honoring the memories of fallen hunters from their agency. It serves as both a sobering reminder of the dangers of the profession as well as a reminder of the legacy current hunters have sworn to uphold.

History

The original Chimera Agency was built around the existing oak that now serves as the Memorial Tree. The tree was first used as a memorial during the agency dedication ceremony, but the hunters collectively decided to continue the tradition. Many agencies light candles or have a memorial wall, but Chimera was the first agency to use a tree. Several other agencies have since followed suit, planting or designating their own trees to be used for lantern-lighting ceremonies for their fallen hunters.
“For those who have died, for those who yet live, and for those who come after, we will burn. We will not let the light go out, and we honor those who have kept the fire with their lives.”
