Crystal, an unregistered Night Fae, hides her identity to avoid the stigmas associated with her race. Night Fae have been historically viewed as evil by light fae and humans alike, and have been nearly eradicated in some parts of the world.
Refusing to register herself with the authorities left a limited number of potential jobs Crystal could have in the human world. Unwilling to remain in her colony all her life, a sense of wanderlust drew her to the ocean, along with her fae affinity, the power of controlling the element of water. She found a job on a smuggling ship that specialized in dealing with supernatural cargo, and while she never revealed her identity to the crew, they have noticed that since she came on board, their journeys have been much faster and smoother.
