The evolution and events that shaped Valenica. Formally first settled in the year 1458 of the lost Golden Empire, Valencians soon adopted their own calendar marking the first established settlements as the first year of their homeland.

A few small settlements along the coast and inland are established. Some settlers expand to the north and south
The Kovant dynasty ends. The Kualis dynasty begins. Magical duels, except for sporting events are made illegal. The frontier lands (Valencia) are claimed by Whetland and settlers are given permission to stake a claim there tax-free provided they pay tribute in the form of raw natural materials
The Dvergr / Dwarves in Dwarforge are first encountered and some minimal trade occurs. This clan of Dwarves is known as the Irongems
As more settlers come to the region some strike northward and settle in Dwarforge and what is now Norland Reach
Hearing that the ‘Endless Sea’ was actually quite narrow and that there is a land rich in forests and fertile soil just a few week’s journey away, on the other side, some set out across the sea on journeys of discovery
The first groups of frontier persons begin to arrive in what is now Longvale and are amazed at the beauty and resources of the land.
As populations reach the thousands, farming is set up in Longvale and Fieldmarch, Mining in Minaecia, and foresting in what is now known as Valafar.
The Alfar / Elves, the Fey folk (elves) are encountered in the forests on the Eastern border of Valafar. There is some minimal interaction and trade, but the Alfar had already grown leery of humans due to encounters with the warlike human tribes in the northern lands. Border skirmishes are more common than parley and trade.
The Longbeard Dvergr / Dwarves clan sends emissaries from their halls in Minaecia to the human-folk, offering peace if the humans would respect their territory. This is accepted and a thriving trade of goods begins.
The lands that are now Hightower and Harkeep are explored. Hargon the Mighty builds a fortress on the southern reaches of Harkeep
The primitive and warlike barbarian human tribes in the north are first encountered. War ensues.
First invasion of the beast men from the area of Greenwood
A stasis and some actual treaties between the lands settled by the Valencians and the territories of the Northern tribes. Trade, intermingling, and cohabitation begins.
Trade routes are firmly established. A network of farming, fishing, husbandry, and mining is established along trade routes that have now been followed for centuries.
Due to the main populace working with their hands, and the influence of the Dwarven distrust in magic, the practice of magic becomes secondary or even tertiary to living off the land.
The second and third beast man invasions occur.
More exploration and the first skirmishes with the Alfar. These skirmishes are ultimately settled peacefully, but enmity still remains for some time.
Magic becomes an all but lost art with very few practitioners. Those that still adhere to the magical ways of Whetland recorded that their magic is much weaker here than in the Empire. Some believe that it is because Whetland is consuming most of the magical energy of the world for its own use, leaving little to be tapped into elsewhere.
The bloodletting plague begins. Originally only on the outskirts of the civilized areas, more and more folk are discovered having died of a horrible disease overnight that causes desanguination without any known cause. Magical curses are blamed. This plague soon spreads into the more urban areas, striking the poorer areas the hardest.
The bloodletting plague is discovered to be caused by a clan of Longteeth. Vile monsters of magic that suck the blood from their victims. They are hunted and killed, driven from the settled lands. Some of them are found to have once been humans, some of them previous victims of the Bloodletting Plague.
During phases of relative prosperity, many of the tribes to the north are integrated into society, some settlers from Whetland begin coming in in search of wide open spaces, and the territories become more or less established. The first walled cities come into existence. The Golden Empire ceases to interfere with the affairs of those in Valencia, choosing to let them self-govern provided the tributes are paid.
The royal and noble classes become loosely established
The Empire of Valencia is established. The empire of Valencia (Longvale, Fieldmarch, and the western kingdoms of Norland, Dwarforge, and the Southern Coast) is created under the first emperor Alfonsel the Bold. Alfonsel pays tribute to Whetland but solidifies local power.
Greenwood declares itself a sovereign nation separate from Valencia.
The free nation of the 12 isles declares its independence from Valencia’s rule. A brief civil war occurs.
The kingdoms of the empire of Valenica expand into Harkeep and Hightower, annexing the areas without force
Trivale, the land of the three valleys is settled and while it allies itself with Valencia, it has never officially been included into the realm.
First ancient human ruins discovered in the interior of Norland Reach
Greycliff Hold, a small island kingdom is established by rebels from Valencia and Greenwood that do not share in the general distrust of magic. It is rumored that the age-old practice of powerful and mighty magic is enthusiastically supported within its borders
The pirate wars erupt. Band of pirates from the unsettled south ally with brigands from Norland and begin raiding both coasts. they are extremely organized and use advanced tactics. For a time they hold both coasts in the grip of fear.
The Pirate fleets are scuttled, ending the wars. Afterwards, Valencia is more kindly disposed to the free frontier settlements
Despite clashes with the Alfar, some humans in the area of Valafar begin regular trade with the elves.
Fieldmarch, a part of the empire of Valenica, and Valafar clash over ownership of the delta on their mutual borders.
Troops of both Valencia and Valafar cease fighting mid-battle when beast-men attack from the forests of Valafar
with the humanoid invaders driven back, the king of Valafar, Quinnisot the Youngling, and Empress Tania of Valencia declare the delta a neutral territory
The treaty between Valencia and Valafar is forgotten, peacefully fading into acknowledged borders. Stronghold becomes recognized as an independent city state and serves as a buffer between the Empire and the rural kingdom
Ancient human ruins of an advance city are discovered in Minaecia. Some assume the ancients were proto-Whetlandians
A civil war begins with all the varying factions getting involved. The Empire’s troops soon are either eradicated or the remaining troops flee to support their guilds. The Emperor and any surviving nobility are publicly executed, rent by foul magics. Each battling faction proclaims itself the ruling faction.
An all-out devastating and decentralized war consumes and destroys the empire, reducing it to rubble and dust. The magical forces released in the ensuing battles destroys the very fabric of space and time all across the empire. Many are incinerated, destroyed, or otherwise slaughtered. The magical forces released draw the attention of demons and denizens from other planes that feed upon the souls of the survivors of Whetland.
Whetland falls into ruin and the first refugees and survivors arrive bringing with them the disastrous tale of the fall of Valencia’s ruling land. General distaste and mistrust in magic begins in earnest.
The first groups of survivors begin to journey to Valencia. Others soon follow. This influx of migrants from the old Empire bring their cautionary tale of the fate of the empire along with them. This feeds into the already anti-magical sentiments fostering in young Valencia.
In the kingdom of Longvale, in the trading city Castellia, two rival wizards emulate a friendly Wizard War and accidentally destroy half of the crops and outlying buildings in the area. Due to the fatalities the wizards are waylaid and their hands are cut off. The use of unsanctioned magic in Longvale is outlawed.
Fieldmarch, Harkeep, and Norland Reach follow suit and make magic illegal. Harkeep makes the use of magic punishable by death.
With the exception of the Free Kingdom of the 12 Isles and Grey Cliff, Magic is outlawed in all of the realm. Fearful Citizens waylay and kill suspected magic-using persons. Local and Regional governments do not interfere.
Magic has all but faded away from Valencia. It is a lost and forgotten art. Those few that do show talent for the art are usually put to death.
People begin to adopt a ‘use name’ in lieu of their true name in order to prevent mages from magically controlling or cursing them as it is ‘common knowledge’ that a sorcerer only needs your name to conjure against you
Lord Griswoulder of Valafar is revealed to secretly be a wizard. His tongue is cut out, his hands removed and he is beheaded, then burnt, and his ashes scattered in the 6 kingdoms
What little magic using people are left hide their abilities and live in secret. A few rogue groups still practice magic and begin to organize into formal, but secret, groups. The Dark Cloaks come into existence as one of these secret spell-casting organizations
Valafar formally secedes from its old treaty alliance with Valencia and a minor revolution begins. Peace is quickly made and Valafar won its independence with a non-aggression agreement between it an Valencia
Emperor Roderick V take the throne of Valencia. Seeking peace he attempts to stabilize the kingdoms and ceases all aggression on the city state and independent kingdoms, bringing stability and prosperity to the region. Trade expands and relative peace reigns
Roderick the Fifth’s 2nd son, Irvan the Stillborn, betrays his older half-brother, Geshwin (the Bard) and his father and sets off the succession wars through a violent usurpation of the throne.
Roderick and the Bard flee Longvale with the aid of some free merchants and a group of adventurers. Gaining help from the dark cloaks they mount a resistance movement against Stillborn the usurper.
Roderick is accidentally slain by his distant cousin, Fromm, the king of Greenwood. The Bard is named the true heir to the throne, being first born but also a bastard.
Following the death of his father, the Bard unites troops of the resistance. His friend Onar the Just becomes his second in command and top general.
Stillborn the Usurper is revealed to be a powerful necromancer
The Bard and his allies win a final, decisive, battle, slaying the Stillborn and ending the usurpation and the Succession War.
The bard ends the universal outlawry of magic works for yearsto help restore peace and prosperity. Cited ot take the throne, he, instead, refuses the crown during his crowning ceremony. He cites Onar the Just as the proper person to oversee the kings and Lords. Onar takes the throne after trying, himself, to refuse it. The dynasty of Alfonsel comes to an end
The bard leaves Longvale a few months later, stating that there are still those that need assistance and some rebels that still need punished. He has never returned and is assumed dead.
Under Onar stability is mostly restored. Some beast man invasions occur due to the weakened state of humanity and its territories.
The first dead army is seen in Greenwood and another later in Valafar. The troops of the Confederacy of Valencia and the Free Kingdoms quell these supernatural invasions. Suspicion over magic continues to permeate society.
Onar is now venerable and still sits on the throne. His eldest son Geshwin II, a scholarly academic, is heir to the throne. with borders stabilized and the several nations mostly at peace, it is a time of relative prosperity and cooperation.
