Humanoid invaders, led by humans begin to invade the peaceful lands known as Whetland, the land of wheat fields
Whetland, known now as only the Golden Empire, was once a shining jewel of civilization centered around magic. Now fallen into ruin and faded into the annuls of myth and legend, The Golden Empire is naught but a warning of the evils of magic and the dangers of mortal men attempting to harness the power of the universe for their own purposes. However, the history of Valencia is rooted in that distant empire, and one must know where they have been to comprehend where they are, or where they are going.
In times that predate the settling of Valencia (PV), the Empire of Whetland was united, expansive, and even the most common folk lived a life of luxury fueled by magic.
Humanoid invaders, led by humans begin to invade the peaceful lands known as Whetland, the land of wheat fields
The feudal lords cease warring among themselves to combat the invasion. The invasion pushes inland
All of Whetland is under siege by the invaders.
Sharil’ Uad unites the feudal warlords of Whetland to stave off invaders from the North
Under the leadership of Sharil’Uad a stalemate is established. The invading hordes no longer advance but cannot be defeated.
Sharil’Uad makes a plea to all sorcerers, wizards, clerics, and all other magic using persons, promising peace and pay if they would help to defeat the invading forces.
Aided by magic and supported by the gods’ priests the tide of battle quickly turns and inhabitant of Whetland start regaining their lost territories
Kovant the Unbeliever becomes the most famous wizard in the newly formed magic troops and is elected their general. He eventually rises to the rank of Grand Commander of all the military.
Sharil’Uad is slain in battle. Kovant takes command of not only the mage-army, but of the standard soldiers as well. He becomes the de facto ruler of Whetland
Magic supplants siege engines and powerful weaponry of the war. Battles are won easily but at the cost of devastating the land and the destruction of crops. Magic begins to be utilized to create food, shelter, and to cure the common folk.
A secondary army of spell casters is created to tend to the needs of the general populace. These troops create food and rebuild the destroyed lands and become unofficial lords and leaders of the local communities as they rebuild the war-ravaged kingdoms.
Magic is used as the primary tool for rebuilding, feeding, and caring for the general population. Most farming, industry, and manual labor is eschewed in lieu of magical means of sustenance and production
In a final battle, the invading armies are repelled and driven out of the Whetlands. The decades War draws to a close
Kovant assumes leadership of the rebuilding process. His generals and officers now consist entirely of spellcasters.
Promising a “new era of prosperity as golden as the wheat which once grew in our fields” Kovant crowns himself as the first and ultimate emperor of Whetland, the Golden Empire.
A small commoner revolt occurs as magic becomes the standard of the elite leaving commoners under the heel of the magic-using class
Kovant, with the overwhelming support of cabinet and court, decrees that magic is the blessing of the universe and that all should learn its secrets and study magic for the enrichment of all.
The first common school of magic is opened in Whetland. Others soon follow. State-sponsored magical education for all becomes available.
Magic replaces all other vocations as the most common profession. Eventually at least 90% of all citizens have formal magical education. Magic permeates the entire culture, becoming the sole and primary occupation, currency, power, and industry.
An unparalleled age of growth and prosperity begins. Disease and famine are eradicated. The population soars.
The first Magical Festival is held featuring competitive spell casting and mock magical duels
The Wizard Wars of the Magical Festivals become the biggest event, eclipsing the Festival itself. Soon local versions of the Wizard Wars arise throughout the empire. Larger cities even build arenas and stadiums to host local and regional Wizard Wars
Kovant dies of old age after extending his life for centuries. His daughter, Ilmania is crowned Empress.
Ilmania dies under unusual circumstances, her younger half-brother Vishan takes the throne
The differing methods of magic begin to form loose and informal guilds centered on furthering their arts.As organizations begin to grow, rivalries between differing magical approaches begin to occur.
The varying factions of magic become formalized into guilds and brotherhoods. The first friendly competitions between rival schools and guilds are seen. These quickly turn hostile.
Vishan disappears, leaving behind only a note written in blood that states
While Valencian Historians use their own yearly designations (PV/ FV) in Wheltand the years were still counted linear. Current scholars do not know this as Whetland has faded into the dust of dreams.
(Known as the year 1 FV to Valencians) The first enterprising settlers begin to colonize Valencia and begin to harvest the natural resources to profit from the new luxury demand for hand-made and natural items.
The Kovant dynasty ends. The Kualis dynasty begins. Magical duels, except for sporting events are made illegal. The frontier lands (Valencia) are claimed by Whetland and settlers are given permission to stake a claim there tax-free provided they pay tribute in the form of raw natural materials
Peace and prosperity reign. The Kualis dynasty remains intact and habitually changes heirs every 50 to 60 years. This keeps the rulers relatabel to the people and the times. Expansion, relative peaces, and prosperity mark this second golden Age
After nearly fifteen hundred years of peace and prosperity, Kualis XXIV, the 30th Emperor, sits on the throne. The population of the Golden Empire is so vast and concentrated that magic is the sole industry and provides for all aspects of life.
After the Magical Festival, following a disputed outcome to the Wizard Wars the first real magical duel, in centuries, resulting in death is fought between a wizard, Hilmoor Dark Cloak and a sorcerer, H’Aib Grundle. Grundle is defeated and destroyed. The Sorcerers’ Guild vows revenge for this unlawful act. This is noted as the beginning of the Mage Wars.
The skirmishes grow in intensity. Troops are deployed to keep the peace. Soon all guilds, all disciplines of magic, and all factions are drawn into the fray.
The first skirmish battles between the two respective guilds are fought. Causalities on both sides are severe and the damage to the land and buildings is paramount.
A civil war begins with all the varying factions getting involved. The Empire’s troops soon are either eradicated or the remaining troops flee to support their guilds. The Emperor and any surviving nobility are publicly executed, rent by foul magics. Each battling faction proclaims itself the ruling faction.
The clashes of troops against battling factions causes distrust against the ruling class. A peacekeeping force is ambushed and accidentally destroy a neutral faction guild’s temple. The clerics of the temple respond with violence. The royalty and nobility begin counter-attacking the unruly factions, taking the offensive.
An all-out devastating and decentralized war consumes and destroys the empire, reducing it to rubble and dust. The magical forces released in the ensuing battles destroys the very fabric of space and time all across the empire. Many are incinerated, destroyed, or otherwise slaughtered. The magical forces released draw the attention of demons and denizens from other planes that feed upon the souls of the survivors of Whetland.
The first groups of survivors begin to journey to Valencia. Others soon follow. This influx of migrants from the old Empire bring their cautionary tale of the fate of the empire along with them. This feeds into the already anti-magical sentiments fostering in young Valencia.
Whetland, the Golden Empire, fades into myth and legend.
