The Abariate of Taar
The nation which occupied the Ruinous Isles to the east of the Nerevarn Peninsula until the great Disaster which rendered the islands uninhabitable.
Assets
The Sapphire Fleet, although officially a separate entity from the nation of Taar, was the nation's de facto naval fleet, as well as performing the functions of both court and palace to the Abari and his officials. In the strictest sense, the fleet was a private possession of the Abari and under his personal command. Tradition however dictated that the fleet was treated as an asset of the nation, and certainly it's firepower, seaworthiness and - by far the most important - it's status as the only deep-ocean fleet in the known world, made it a valuable asset indeed.
History
The Abariate was formed by the unification of the archepelago under Abari Gashud of Taar, previously the Abari, or Chief, of only one of the islands. In 1053 when Abari Gashud was in the process of uniting the islands by conquest, the then-King of Nerevarn agreed to support one of the larger islands which was holding out against him, and the two rulers went to war. The King was killed in the resulting naval battle, and his son - the swiftly crowned King Casavir III - brokered a peace treaty between Nerevarn and Abari Gashud which held for almost two centuries until the Disaster brought about the sudden end of the Abariate.
Disbandment
The Disaster - the exact nature of which is lost to history - caused the death of almost every citizen and foreigner on the islands in a very short period of time. The best theory is that the Grey Plague, an illness which seems to have spread throughout the area and about which Nerevarnese scribes had only second or third-hand information, led to societal collapse and the end of livable conditions on the islands.
