Shaarif River

Shaarif River, also called the River of Generosity, was one of the mightiest rivers in tound along the border of the Cities of the Heart, in south Ashad and the Cities of the Ancients in interior Ashad in 395 AC.

Geography

Shaarif River wound for hundreds of miles from the fringes of the barren Sand Sea, through the valley of drakes before finally emptying into the Gulf of Gifts.   The river was several hundred yards across, and more than 30 feet (nine meters) deep in some areas. Its banks sloped steeply in most places.   Flooding Every spring, the heavy rains had a chance of causing the river to flood its banks, although the flooding was not severe, but it would cause hundreds of fish and frogs to become stranded in the muddy river banks and it helped to fertilize the lands along the banks.   The Shaarif River flooded yearly, and this supply of water to the surrounding fields resulted in the most fertile farmland in all of Ashad. The city of Al-Shaladar  rested at the source the river, and massive sluice gates were used to divert the water into the canals of the city. This water was used for mills and to turn giant fans to blow the smell of cattle and tanneries away.

History

The Shaladar inhabitants of the surrounding cities would wash newborn babies in the waters of the Shaarif during their naming ceremony. The dead were placed on small rafts to be carried downstream, entrusted to the spirit's care in the watery underworld.
