Gray Book

By Kasper Gray

The Gray Book, written ca. 1830 by Kasper Gray and published in 1867, is considered the most important book in Dark Magic. When published, the book is about 240 pages.   The contents of the Gray Book are split into five sections: Dark Spells, Dark Potions, Dark Objects, Dark Plants, and Dark Animals.

  • The Dark Spell portion contains spells created to kill or maim both witches and humans alike. The first mention of Mortem is detailed there as well as the very detailed and complicated Mors Magicae spell. There are also notes on necromancy, but no spell is noted, and as far as anyone knows, Gray was unable to create a necromancy spell.
  • The Dark Potions section details many murderous or harmful potions that can be brewed. Many of the potions mentioned are used by the Council as a form of torture (the general population does not know this). The most useful potion (in the Council's opinion) is a truth potion that forces the speaker to talk or it causes immense pain.
  • The Dark Object portion lists the many extant Dark objects Gray knew about as well as details the one he had created, including the Mors Torque (used for executions) and the Vincula (used for torture). Gray noted his favorite Dark objects are the Dens Coronam (a crown with spikes that pierce the skull with a simple spell) and the Insaniam Armilla (a bracelet that, when worn, causes immediate and permanent insanity in the wearer).
  • The Dark Plant section describes plants that can be used with potions (or by themselves) that will cause harm to the victim. Particularly noted is a type of rose that emanates a scent that will kill the smeller and a vine that will strangle its victim.
  • The Dark Animal portion contains descriptions of animals that are either created through Dark Magic or are created to simply harm or kill. Gray seemed to be particularly fond of the Tenebris and the Malumcapra.

Grey's manuscript contains margin notes of additions or changes as well as extensive (and often gruesome) illustrations, all of which were published with the book. Despite Gray's grisly experiments on humans, there are no mentions in the Gray Book of the experiments, leading some to believe the Council is hiding more of his writings or that Gray himself hid them away. (There is the inclusion of other gruesome experiments, however).

Historical Details

History

The Gray Book was written ca. 1830 by Kasper Gray. After Gray's death, the manuscript along with margin notes and illustrations, were discovered by Council after their grisly uncovering of his experiments.

When news of the book leaked, the Council staunchly refused to publish until 1876, when academic pressure forced the Council to concede that at least some academics should have knowledge of the Gray Book in relation to Dark Magic. However, the Council has supposedly only published one copy, which is held in the Great Library.
