The devouring horde
The Phervian were losing the war, they had already lost Frostmourn, the shifter wastes and the Blessed planes and the Shadow planes looked to follow close behind. To prevent the armies from meeting, the Phervian used their dark magic in combination with the science of the gods to create an army of the damned, from the various mausoleums south of the Silent lake.
The army created was unleashed first on the Shifter tribes passing through Drakes way, led by Saberfang himself. Moved by a group of Phervian mages, the horde slammed into the Shifters with ravenous zeel, turning several into their own kind. Saberfang's Moon Saber shone in the moonlight as it carved through the enemy. The horde now having tasted blood however was turned into a frenzy, attacking both sides indiscriminately with vast numbers. Trying to find a more defensible position Saberfang and an Phervian elder ended up on the same hill, each with a rag-tag of survivors. The two men quickly reached an accord and defended their injured. The hill shone, not only from the Moon Saber but the magic that filled the air.
Eventually, the Akoomite relief force, forced their way to the hill, killing the remaining monsters. The Valley was stained red with blood and thousands of desecrated corpses lay in every direction. The remaining we're sealed in their graves, to starve and wither away to dust. Rumors say of another horde, moved south to Voiddoll. Beware unmarked tombs around the Silent Lake, beware those that do not sleep, beware that which lurks in the marsh.
Historical Basis
- The research was done into creating a horde in 70 Rebel but was sealed away before it was used, and didn't involve the dead.
- Saberfang and shifters did fight with the Illthid during the battle of Drake's way, though that battle took place at the very end of the war and was against Orcs
- The shadow planes were free before the blessed planes.
- Grunkle's Angels fought a monstrous horde in 122 Fey that seemed to come from the Mausoleums in the area.
Spread
- Prominent in the western content, especially in the blessed plains.
- Those educated in history tend to realize it as propaganda by the Akoomites due to the real war battle of Drake's way.
In Art
Many pieces show the battle, depicting the horde as large featureless humanoid brutes. Most focus on Saberfang and Phervian Elder working together to defend their people.
